So I picked this bike up last weekend from a fellow SOHC4.net member in the hopes that it would quench my thirst for a scrambler. I'm in it for $100 bucks plus a half tank of gas used to go get it. It came with a tote filled with a mostly complete wiring harness, some original fasteners as well as some stainless, the front signals, battery box, fenders, brake pedal assembly and a few other odds and ends. Oh yeah, a new rear tire was also tossed in on the deal along with a printed out shop manual and some wiring diagrams. There's no title, but I got a bill of sale and the forms to get a bonded title if I choose to go that route.

So far, I have spent a few hours smoking cigarettes and staring at it next to my cb750, daydreaming of what it would look like with an early triumph style flattrack solo seat with a shaved down chrome or black rear fender sitting on some 18 x 400 knobbies. I pulled out the harness and started working my way down to the basics.

Here's what I started with...

Looks like a great start! Nice work on the wiring harness, I wish I had the Kahonaas to try to do that!

Thanks guys. I've been lacking motivation over the last week. I thought I had a sure thing source for some carbs, but it's not so sure at the moment. I have tinkered a bit more with the wiring. I've got it stripped down to ignition, headlight, tail/brake light, fuse block, and a few stubs for kill switch and ignition switch. There are a few oddities that I couldn't explain with the factory wiring diagram I still need to sort through, but it's pretty dang close to a complete harness now. I haven't decided if I'm going to leave the starter or go with a kick only setup.

I have a laundry list of odds and ends I need to order to get it ready to test fire. I wanted to hold off on the tidbits until I had the fuel delivery handled, but that is turning out to be a "hurry up and wait" scenario. I'll post a picture of the complete harness when I get it all wrapped up.

I got sidetracked this weekend with a local shop's poker run, but I did get around to purchasing some carbs off ebay. The lister said he pulled them off a cb350, but after I won the auction I looked a little closer at the pics and they don't look right. They look like a set of XS carbs. I may be kicking myself over this one. XS360 carbs might have a shot at working out?

This is what I got. Hard to say what model they are off of from the pics:

Those are most definitly not CB350 carbs. Might be Yamaha as they look similar to my XS650 carbs. If they arent vaccuum carbs, and they fit your intakes (which Im guessing they wont because the brackets holding them together) you could maybe make them work. Need to figure out what size they are.

Honestly though, your best bet is to sell them and get some actual cb360 carbs, or a set od Mikuni VM28s.

I guess I finally have a good reason to buy a digital caliper now. I'll have to wait until good ol' USPS drops them on my doorstep, but I'll snap some shots for reference. Maybe someone here might have a use for them.

If it don't hit the ton, well it aint no fun!
Great looking build! i just picked up a couple cb360 and have a butt load of parts including a wiring harness and a factory wiring diagram that was in the owners manual. I've got some sets of carbs in various states if you guys need some. Ride on!

Thanks, Jay. I think I have my harness figured out, but the carbs I got off ebay are most definitely not going to work. If you have a set you're willing to part with, hit me up. I didn't find any numbers stamped on my carb tops. Just says Mikuni Kogyo Co. LTD Japan on the diaphragm covers. I'm almost positive they are Yamaha XS carbs. I should have done my homework and not trusted an ebay seller discription.

Save your money and buy a set of new mikunis from one of the aftermarket dealers. I went through 8 sets of e-bay 360 carbs (all guaranteed by the way) before I found a set that was not pure junk. By the time you find a decent set, add in the cost of the rebuild kits, you are nearly at the purchase price of a new set.

I just snapped a few shots of the mystery carburetors. If anyone can ID them for me it I'd be much appreciative.

If anyone is in the market for a set of xs/tx carburetors, let me know. I pulled the lids last night, and the diaphragms appear to be intact. These probably need kits and for sure need cleaning. The throttle blades move freely, but the choke is sticking. Offers? Trades? CB/CL/SL 350 or CB/CL 360 carbs would make for a dandy swap. Just putting that out there. Progress is at a stall point for a bit while I sort that out. I pulled the sprocket cover this weekend to properly route the alternator wiring (it was dangling under the bike), and whilst buttoning it back together I noticed the transmission won't shift up or down and the neutral switch is missing. I didn't tear into it any further since the thermometer pushing triple digits. I wasn't planning on tearing into this motor, but my plans may be changing pretty quick.

I pulled my head out of my butt when I got home and rocked the bike a little and it shifted. The heat gets to me sometimes.

No major updates to report. I sold the XS650 carbs this weekend, and I'm still hunting and pecking around for some cheap carbs. I emailed Sudco for some info on what they had to offer, and they weren't helpful at all. The rep that emailed me back said their microfiche didn't go that far back. Seriously? I emailed back with intake dimensions and everything else I could think of to mention, but I never heard back again. They are on my dbag list for now. So the ebay search continues.

I haven't forgot you Wixil, but much like the bikes in my garage my health is in a constant state of flux and ambition is getting hard to come by. i'll shoot some picks tomorrow so you can see how they are and I can assure you they will be cheap.

Thanks, Jay. I've been antsy I guess since it's been too hot here to ride (100+ for way too long). Sorry to hear about your health, mate.

What are you thinking on price? Is one of the float boals missing? Are the diaphragms in good shape? Thanks.
