A fool and his first CL 350 cafe build

Thanks guys. I have seen a bunch of antique bikes with the red frame. So decided to use the idea. The rims where in bad shape so powder coating them was the best solution. Got some shorty mufflers real cheap at a swap meet in Daytona yesterday. Bikes, Bikes and more bikes EVERYWHERE!!!!!!

Re: A fool and his first CL 350 cafe build:seat work and rattle can paint

I am still waiting on parts (and money to buy them) to finish my motor so I decided to try doing some rattle can paint and put together a seat. I am finding it really togh to get nice sharp masking lines? But the color scheme looks good I think. The finish is fair but looks ok from a distance. I will have to have someone do it over who knows what their doing someday when I can afford to pay them.

I bought a pillion pad at a swap meet during Daytona bike week for $10 that I thought I could modify. The pad was just a little to long but the right width. So I cut a new metal pan base. Swapped the new base for that on the pillion pad. Seems to fit well.

Damn! Photobucket seems to have crapped out. I will add some more pics when it works again.

Here's the secret to sharp masking lines. First base coat, then mask off your stripes. Next, hit it with a coat of clear. This will seal your mask off and no color can wick past it. Next, apply your last color coat, block it and clear it. When you pull off the mask the lines will be razor sharp due to that middle coat of clear.

Re: A fool and his first CL 350 cafe build: seat pan

Ok, try to add more pics.

looking great! I like the red rims! Eventually if/when work doesn't kill all of my time I'm thinking of P/Cing my 350's rims and red in up for consideration. Also, Nice job on the gauges!

Got a chance to do a little more work while I wait for money to buy engine parts. Cleaned up the tach and applied the new decal.

Then continued my rattle can paint job on my tank. Took me three tries to get something that looked OK. Looks good from a distance at least. Someday when I win the lottery I'll hire someone to do it right.

Thanks for the advice. My lines did come out much better.

Finally got some work done again on this project. Finished the motor internals rebuild and mounted motor in frame. Hope to get things finished up soon and fire her up!

Thanks, I wanted to cover the rubber mount that holds the tank down. I think I am going to redo the seat cushion though. It seems too thick (padding) and sits up in a funny looking way.

Myabe I am daft (more than maybe I am sure I am). But, having the outer upper fork springs, gators, and headlight ears over the upper tubes of these front forks is giving me a problem to get them pushed up into the tripple tree? I can't get a hold of the inner shaft to push it up into the triple tree all the way to be able to then lock them down with the pinch bolts on the triple tree (or thread in the upper fork cap bolts). When I try I can only push from the lower outer fork covers and without innner fork fluid (which the upper cap bolts hold in) and the outer springs not compressed, the inner fork tubes don't get pushed up all the way that they need to be. If who ever reads this is able to follow what I am trying to describe. What am I doing wrong?

OK, figured out how to mount the forks. I filled them completely with fork oil to keep them fully extended while pushing them up in place through the outer springs/boots and headlight ear supports.

More mockup and assembly done. Starting to look like a racer!

How about this question (I am full of stupid questions). How are people handling the fitment of rear sets mounted on the old passenger peg mounts and clearance for the kick start?

OK, It has been a few months since I made any updates but have finished this project and have been enjoying breaking her in. But as they say all good things must come to an end. I will have to put her up for sale as I am in need of cash for some medical issues and my wife wants to do a short trip this fall. But, no worries! Hopefully I will have a little left over to start another project. Can't wait! Thanks to everyone for their help and advice on this first one. I will post an add on the for sale section. Please spred the word to those near me in the dirty southeast! Cheers. Greg][[URL=http://s1376.photobucket.com/user/gregajones1/media/Honda2_zps66fba2c8.jpg.html]
