Ace stalling and dying

Howdy!

This is my first post on the forum, but I've been checking it out for a few months for ideas and info.

Long story short: I bought a used Ace from 2011, which hadn't been driven for 2 years or so by the first owner, then bought by someone who made some mods (new exhaust, remvoed the filter thing), but only did a few 100 KM's.

I'm the 3rd owner and had the bike get a big maintenance at 500KM's, which did wonders to the bike (clutch, stability, startup,...).

Now I'm at 750KM, and haven't had issues at all, except for stalling when the bike wasn't warm enough, my bad.

Yesterday, however, I drove for about 2 hours (bike had been standing still for 10 days) without any problems. I did stop and start 8 or 10 times though, since I had to deliver some letters to people living nearby.

Then, I felt the bike stalling a little, then a little more, and then just dying on me. Waiting it out for 5 minutes, then starting the bike and letting it run idle for some minutes helped a little, but after 3-4 minutes of driving it stalled and died on me again. After 15 minutes of that, the bike didn't feel like starting any more.

I left the bike with my brother and will pick it up on wednesday. I am wondering what the problem could be, though... Was the stopping and starting a bad idea? Did the engine just get too hot? Did I push it by driving for over 2 hours?

Also, there's still plenty of gas, so I know that's not the problem :)

I had exactly your symptoms. If the EGR stuff was removed by previous owners you may find that whatever they used to plug the vertical hole in the front left side of the carburettor has been shaken loose and fell out.

And at other times, sorry to mention it, perhaps knocked the kill switch on? or trying to start with side stand down? Or in gear without clutch pulled in?

Actually it is not to the left. Here is a pick that I borrowed from Stroker Crazy. If EGR gear has been removed this must be filled with something. See little black grub screw.

Hi 2b! Thanks for your reply!

I checked the kill-switch, keys, and side stand, unfortunately that wasn't it, it would've been an easy fix! :) also, I always start in neutral, and the last time I tried starting the bike (which was after he stalled, and then the engine died), the bike started but died after 4 or 5 seconds.

No apologies by the way, I don't know much about bikes, so it's good that someone checks all possibilities with me :)

The EGR thing might be a possibility... I'll check it out on wednesday! What do they usually fill that hole with?

Does this also imply that this wouldn't be a problem with overheating or too much stop/starting?

Have you tried the reserve setting on petrol tank. It kicks in when you still have about 3 litres left. Some have used screws, grub screws, all sorts really to fill that hole. Some have left just the hose connected and bunged up the end of that with a bolt or qnything that comes to hand. If it is that, it will just be that it vibrated loose. Otherwise pull the plug out and post a pic of it.

I tried the reserve setting a little while before the ace refused to start anymore. I was able to drive a little bit and it did go a little better than before, but in the end it stalled anyway.

I'm not really sure what the hole is filled with, or if the hose was just left on. I'll check it out tomorrow. The bike isn't that far from home, so the plan is to ride it home, or worst case scenario, push it home.

Sooo the bike was out of gas :p

I went back to my brother to try starting the bike, but checked the gas tank first, which was totally empty. Also, the hole was still filled with a screw, it looked to be done quite well also!
I had checked the gas tank the first 2 times the bike stalled, and it looked low but not nearly empty, apparently I must have been wrong.

Ah well, went to the petrol station, bought a jerrycan with a couple of litres of gas, filled the bike, 3 kicks, started and drove like a charm :)

That's actually the first time I've éver ran out of gas, and I used to drive loads of old bikes without a gas meter. :)

Good outcome. If only all glitches resolved themself like that. Soooo... lever down for normal use, then when you run out, up to run on reserve THEN down again after filling up ;)

Goes the other way round i think? up is on, bottom is reserve and pointing backwards when horizontal is off? maybe these shady chinamen also mount different fuel petcocks? would be good to know.

Mine is definitely the way round I wrote it.

I get around 190kms before it needs reserve. Filling up fairly soon after it uses just over 6 litres. So I could probably go 280km on the 9.2 litre tank, but as a matter of habit I just fill up when I get to the next gas station after hitting reserve then reset the trip meter.

The arrow on both sides of the lever points to words on the tap itself. On, Off or Res.

It was petrol Rapido. Happens to all of us once.

Well it did seem to do the bike some good to ride untill it runs completely out of petrol! Went for a ride a couple of days ago, and the bike keeps driving better and better.

The clutch feels very good, and I notice my top speed is improving as well. I'm at 820KM now, so I'm intrigued how much better it'll do :)

I'm going to have the bike get a maintenance at 1000KM (I don't do much myself, because, I can't :) ), and I'm considering having some work done.

Especially the noise is a bit loud, it has a different exhaust (this one, I think: https://www.ooracing.com/store/silencer-end-can-cafe-racer-straight-end-steel-chrome-construction.html) and I think that's what causing the noise.

Also, I'd like to have a different rear fender, one that finishes horizontally, diagonal with the saddle, so it has a bit more of a café racer look.

A nice looking can but not much use for silencing. An overly noisy exhaust gets boring real quick! (Until you go deaf, that is).

Nothing gets much simpler for routine maintenance than a push-rod single like the 'Ace'!

There have been several posts about the method, and many people here willing to help.

It's always a good time to learn something new.

Try a reverse cone muffler repacked with glass mat padding. Mine is now no louder than stock but almost straight through pipe(small mesh in pipe. Put pipe extension in end . Much quieter than in my video.

I should have read this topic sooner...
Exactly the same thing happened to me today...
I tried everything... But nothing worked. The reserve setting is just there for show.
It didnt work at all.
Had 200-300 ml or even 500 left. But bike would not run...
Luckily gas station was 500m away (which i did not know...) so after a long walk found out where it was.
Meanwhile the locals looked at me as if i had lost my mind. Walking on the pedestrian walkway with a motorcycle.
Got stopped several times: questions 'what is it?' 'Costs?' Etc.

But finally home:)

yeah i still get caught out sometimes remembering which is on and which is reserve , when the handle is pointing towards the ground the arrow on it is pointing up to the on position and when its up and the arrow points to the reserve position.
I just got a new tank and can tell you that they have lowered the tap takoff even more on the new tank so the reserve is effectively smaller then what i was used to.
