Advice on 2nd hand sport bike

Been Around the Block
Gentlemen,
I have found my self in want of a modern sport bike to ease the pain of the "ever-lengthening-cafe-project" I am working on. I am looking for a stock mid 2000's, probably Japanese but not a must, 600cc+ sport bike. $6k budget. There seems to be quite a lot available in this price range.
Does anybody have any advice on what is hot, what to stay away from, issues to look for etc.

As always, I appreciate the wealth of knowledge that this forum has to offer.

Im really happy with my 2000 gsxr750 StreetFighter...
so much so, that Im building up an 04 gsxr 750...

Its good to have a few of each genre...

Stick with non customized, low mileage bikes and you'll be fine. The older the seller, the better the bike usually. The CBR600 f4i is an awesome bike. Tons out there and prices are pretty cheap. Also, look into the Suzuki SV650. I love those things, and again, they can be had on the cheap.

Von nailed it there. A lot of the younger "Modders" are like the Ricky Racer car kids. They mod the crap out of their bikes to the point of impeding performance and reliability. I know a girl whose boyfriend modded her brand new Ninja 250 with a boat load of unnecessary carp and "tuning". She barley road it last year because it had so many problems and ended up selling it say it was "a bad bike". Not to mention a lot of those types fancy themselves to be future "Stuntahz" and have probably dropped the bike a few times.

x2 on the SV, but I am biased.

Thanks for the advice. I opted to go for broke and picked up a nearly new Triumph Daytona 675. So much fun! I now realize why everybody calls the honda 175 small.
