Ignore the Beemer [ now sold ] check the seat - a genuine AJS 7R. I've had it for nearly 40 years !

It's been on at least 30 Cafe Racers, and each time I sold a bike - I kept the seat. It's going on my latest project - a Yam XS 500. I want to build it in the spirit of the sixties - I WILL keep the discs though - self preservation.

I might use the Triumph tank, but I quite like the idea of a 5 gall. Manx Wideline - we'll see.

This will be my first Japanese Cafe Racer project, and I'm looking forward to the challenge.

I ended up with 2 XS500's in the deal, so the second one will probably become a Flat Tracker and I'll sell my Suzy GS450 F/Tracker off.

Absolutely beautiful seat/tail! I have fallen in love with the AJS 7R and Matchless G50 and had though about running a repro on my KZ. Unfortunately, my KZ didn't have the right "feel" to go about mucking up the 7R's reputation. Have at it! We'll be watching! ;D

There is one Classic Racer guy here in the UK making these seats [ repros ], but he only supplies to Racers. No big deal to make a set of moulds though !

Yes - the seat didn't look right on the Beemer, and that ended up with a 750SS Duke single seat when it was finished.

Loads of miles under that seat AND loads of good memories !

Not entirely sure about the XS500 either, but if it doesn't look right I have another 750 Duke seat GTG. I was going to use an AJS7R or Goldie 5 Gallon race tank - but now I've seen Tim's 650 with a Manx tank ??????????????????

It's weird - stuff that looks dead right on a 60's Brit Cafe Racer, doesn't travel over to the early Japanese CR's - proving I guess that the early Japanese stuff does have it's own seperate [ and legitimate ] identity.

That brings up exhausts - I'd love to have 2 x Goldie silencers on a bike just one more time - but I think the Japanese CR's look better with meggas or maybe some sexy curved jobs - a la 400 /450 race Hondas. There's a guy here in the UK making two versions - one with baffles and one without !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Frank at CRA has a reproduction of this seat. I love the look, but yes, it does take something very special to pull it off.

Great looking seat from one of my all time favorite pairs of bikes late model 7R /G50.

The style lends itself to a number of bikes but needs to be modified to flow properly IMHO. maybe someone couls copy the style and offer a range of varieties to suit other bikes in slightly different proportions.

BTW, Dave S's megs are hardly street legal. His version of baffles is to reduce the noise on a race track from ear bleed to merely head splitting levels of pain.

Tried the AJS 7R seat on the Yam project - just doesn't look right...........

So I've gone back to the Duke 750SS race seat. BTW - this is day 1 - couldn't resist a little mock up to give me a buzz.
