Another cam chain question

Been Around the Block
So, my cb175 has spend the better part of the last 8 months with the engine in pieces. I have been attempting to put it all back together but kept breaking rings when I tried to put the jugs back on. No, I wasn't using a spring compressor...that would take the headache and swearing out of it.

Got the jugs and head back on last night and started to fish the cam chain through with the piece of wire I had so carefully kept in place for 8 months. Once I got the cam chain through I looked up to grab a beer in celebration and at that point the cam chain dove into the engine. I was able to retrieve it but now without any kind of guide I fear it may be another 8 months until I can get it fished through. I really really really don't want to remove the head and jugs again.

Has anybody pulled off this maneuver? Does anybody have any tips or suggestions?

It has been a while since I looked, but isn't the routing in the manual?

hmm, sounds like it might be tricky. Nothings impossible and keep telling yourself that ;D. I keep thinking that maybe getting the chain started (even if its a tooth or two) and the carefully inverting the engine so it wont fall off the crank, then spin the crank to advance the chain and use a bent coathanger to retrieve it as soon as the slightest bit of chain presents itself. good luck

edit:
or just get some wire and wrap it through again. keep trying!
