Been Around the Block
Hello all,

Just wanted to introduce myself. Just registered today (after reading the sight for a few months like that creepy kid at a party who sits in the corner and watches all the cool kids but never says anything).

My name is Colin and I'm from Portland, OR. I decided I wanted to build a cafe style bike and decided the CB750 was a great platform to work on. After doing what I thought was enough research I pulled the trigger on an 81 CB750F Super Sport. I later learned the DOHC bikes are the red-headed step children of the Cafe scene and modifying one has been, and will continue to be an uphill battle.

The bike I choose had bald tires, leaking gas and oil, a leaking gas tank, a hideous paint job and what I was hoping was the cam chain slapping around from likely never being adjusted - perfect!

My prior bike experience consists of owning a Triumph Daytona 675 for 2 years and putting 14k miles on it and modifying nothing so I'm relying on my years of wrenching on cars to provide me with the mechanical abilities to get to my desired end state.

I'll be starting a build thread as soon as I can get some pictures downloaded so if anyone wants to see another 750 turn into a cafe racer - stand by.

Ok - got a build thread started -

Hey man welcome! I'm new as well. I actually just signed up for the first time yesterday. That's sweet that you are going on a limb and going to battle that beast of a build. I did the same thing with the build of a 71 Yamaha R5 350 and it was an uphill battle as well. Now my build consists of my 13' triumph t100. Slowly but surely coming along. But as before, welcome!

Welcome to DTT. Don't sweat the fact that you picked up a DOHC bike. It may have some "interesting" features that make it somewhat difficult to modify, bit the motor is dead nuts reliable and has gobs of useable power. You'll also find that folks here don't really follow convention when it comes to building bikes most of the time anyhow, so you'll fit right in. As Justin said, post lots of pics and ask any questions you'd like. Lots of really smart and helpful folks here.

Yeah, and I'm not one of them---> stupid as hell, and normal as you'll ever be around.

Thanks for the welcome!

I started a build thread and posted a link in my original post.

The questions start around post 3.

DOHC is a great bike to build. Just takes a little fab skill.

Nice work on your subframe in your build thread. That's the worst part of the bike when it comes to your conventional "café racer." Looks like you made quick work of it.
