anyone use drill rod for linkage?

I am having problems finding stainless rod that is long enough, threaded properly (fine vs rough), and the right grade. My local hardware store has stainless drill rod available and I could simply use a tap/die to get it the threading right and eliminate the need for a tube cover. My concern is the rod may be too brittle. So has any one else tried this?

Buy a 1/4" piece of stainless, thread it 1/4-20, and drill and tap your connectors the same.

The trouble is the stainless available at my local places is not long enough. I will make a trip and see if they got anything new in recently.

You can get 6 feet of stainless from McMaster for about $10. Get the correct size tap, a beer, and you are in business. Then when you are finished you can take pride in knowing you did it yourself, the right way.

It is for the brake linkage on a 1982 nighthawk 450. I go mostly to Ace and Home Depot and will be checking out Lowes next. I don't think I have a McMasters around here but I will google. This does answer my basic question though drill rod will not work. Thanks guys.
