I am slowly striping all the bagage off my 81' DOHC now. Let's just say there is a lot more to it than that. The biggest issue I am having (aside from budget and time) is that in order to keep the bike running you smooth you need good back pressure at the carbs because they are vacuum operated. I would be interested to see if anyone has fab'ed a set of flat slides on a DOHC.

Don't get me wrong I love my bike but it isn't the easiest first project.

I think the sohc's most appealing feature is the exposed very very pretty engine... the dohc is well... uhm...

There are a few DOHC cafe's out there. They are not near as popular as the previous generation CB's. They have their advantages and disadvantages (just like any other bike). The main disadvantage in most cafe builders' opinions are the vacuum operated carbs. They are a pian in the A$$ to tune with pod filters (and potentially damaging to the engine). The way around those are to buy a new setup- like some flatslides. I am currently building an 81 CB750K. Hopefully it will inspire some people to tear into the often avoided 2nd gen CB's. Here is a pic of a nice one. If you'd like more info on these, try visiting www.cb750c.com or my blog. Take it easy!!!

You need to watch more local Classifieds, try Craigslist. The SOHC bikes are ALWAYS cheaper than their DOHC siblings around here, you'd end up money behind by starting DOHC and trying to make it look like the older SOHC bike.

Hi guys,

After reading this thread it's amazing the comparison between costs in the US and Australia. CB750s (SOHC) can start at anywhere between $7000 - $12000 for a fairly poor example. DOHC models are about half the price.

I haven't seen too may DOHC cafe racers on the net, especially on this site, anyone know site to visit?

Here's a cool CB750 DOHC build blog of one of our customer. The guy knows what he's doing, and really going into details. Cant wait till he finish his project.

I say get whatever bike you want. If you're worried about the aesthetics of the DOHC, then don't get it. Personally however, I'd just go ahead and do it...or do something really nuts and get one of the older Goldwings to make into a torque-monster cafe [evil smiley].

You'll enjoy it whatever you decide to get.

I keep trying to get my dad to do just that!!! He's got a NICE restored 77 naked wing. I keep telling him it would be the dog's wobblies with a set of clubmans and a seat cowl.... Oh well, maybe one day...
