Assembling: Puny Yamaha Cafe Racer

Gordon

Been Around the Block
Well, its been quite a long time since the last update. The bike was opened up for painting and was delayed for over 2.5 months. Finally, we started assembling the cafe yesterday and the costs are already burning my pants off!

Glad to see some bike after looking at a sea of parts lying around in the garage. This is what was done till today:

- Restored and painted chassis
- painted engine, fork, hubs, tank, side panels and cowl
- got a new round taillight that will be almost flush with the cowl
- new larger headlamp, clip-on bars and shorter headlight brackets
- got a million spares to assemble the bike
- a million bolts / washers / nuts
- literally everything that is on the bike except the chassis, engine, hubs and forks is brand new.
- even the rear suspension has to be changed

Next on the list is:

- make holes in the new rearset brackets for the footpegs and levers
- install wiring
- fire the bike up
- make new seat cover and cushion
- finally install tank n panels

Attached some pics too!

Okay in huge trouble and very irritated. The rearsets brackets are probably miscalculated. Moreover, there is no place to fit the rear footpegs for the pillion. Ideas anyone?!

The footpeg brackets are quite high, if I take them any lower it'll mess with the silencer. Other option is to make the seat higher. Even if I do get that right, there isn't any place for the pillion pegs. I was thinking that I'll get the bike completely assembled. Make a seat thats just as high as the tank height and then check the footpeg location.

Attached a pic taken before the bike was opened (with the tank on). This position was very comfortable, but then I had to make new mounting points for the levers and took them higher....see the new pic (with the tank off).

Looks pretty good so far.

As to the passenger pegs; ride one-up and get your lady friend a bike of her own.

as to your rear sets; I don't see any mounted, but I do see a plate welded to the rear triangle. Maybe grind out the inside of the triangle and mount a plate there instead. That way your foot controls are in a "better" position for you. As long as it's only painted, you won't be out that much work. If it's been powdercoated, then....you have some thinking to do.

hope that helps some.

Thanks for the reply philos1.

Spot on, you got that 100% right. The footpegs haven't been mounted since I don't have the seat ready with me. I thought I'd take measurements and then drill holes into that plate.

I really need to have rear footpegs, to make it somewhat practical too. Initial thoughts were to mount them on the rear shocks, but then it'd be seriously uncomfortable because of the constant wheel movement.

Update:

- wiring DONE
- meters DONE
- grips, cables and switches DONE
- chain is also fixed
- new rear shocks
- new stoppers to prevent the handle from touching the tank on turns

The seat is ready, looks great. But the only issue is that it doesn't match the bike. I probably made it too big. Uploaded some pics of the
- seat
- the bike with the tank and seat
