I just want to say i just came to these forums because i just bought my first bike and want to make a cafe racer. Ive been very discouraged by all the talk in the nominations thread.
One comment really bugged me:
"I would but im pretty sure that it needs to at the very least belong to a member to be in the running and besides dotheton members have shown time and time again that cafe racers dont need to be fast its all show for 90% of this crowd. Cookie cutter cb's with the same thousand dollar tank, tail and universal rear sets."
You never know who's reading, maybe a new member thinking about trying to get into the community that you could really turn off by a simple comment. I bought a 360cl, do i need to go get a "cool" bike to be accepted?

i dont know if i have any say in this seeing as how i have a "cookie cutter cb360" but there are a few jerks on here. pay them no mind, i would say 90% or more of the guys on here are awesome and very helpful. there are a lot of old honda cafes because they are cheap to buy and fun to build. its true a lot of them look the same with the bump seat and low bars, but thats just the cafe look. i really like seeing all the things people do to make these that make them unique i would say no two are truely alike and thats awesome. i have a bump seat and low bars, but I built my bike. as your name suggests. you like to DIY. that is what makes these bikes great. its builders taking their ideas and turning them into a bike they can ride. plus giving an old honda a chance at hitting the road again is always a good thing.
so screw the critics, build what you like. and you always have a home here at dtt, sure hope you stick around man. id love to check out your build

no worries ninja. A cl360 qualifies a cool bike in my book. focus more on building and less on the politics and you will love the site.

Hey thedyingninja,

There are always a-holes on every forum. But the majority are pretty easy goin and helpful. Bottom line is build what you want. Five guys will like it, five guys wont, who cares. ;)

Thanks, thats just what im gonna do, do it my way. This aught to be fun! and yeah this group seems pretty good, pretty cool, lots of advice and lots of knowledge.
Ive been inspired by the people here to try to make sure i document this build from start to finish.
sweet!

We all get a little jaded at times but I think that the OP was suggesting that maybe what we want as a BBOTM is a bike that stands out in terms of being more creative, or different in some way. What I think he was getting at is that it's nice to see people building Cafe Racer inspired bikes, but for BOTM it might be nice to see bikes that are pushing the envelope or are truer to the roots of the design ethos.

It's your bike and you can do what you want with it, but it's a shame to see newcomers start off with a strip and grind session when they haven't got the bike running. It's nice to have a sweet looking bike in the garage or your sitting room that you made your own, but it's more fun to have a bike - even a stock POS - that you can ride.

The way the Cafe bikes evolved was rarely a "build". We typically had a bike that we rode all the time and as the cash came in we bought a tank or seat or pipes etc and slowly transformed it. Engines came out only when there was something that needs fixing.

Too many bikes are stripped down and bits cut off and then the bike isn't ridden because it doesn't actually work well as a motorcycle. No fenders is a guarantee of dirt and rocks in the carbs or on top of the engine. No front fender or no fork brace means the front end wonders on the road. Low bars are hard to learn to ride with and are painful with stock pegs, but newcomers don't know any of that.

You learn as you go in this game, and from my perspective, I'd rather see guys learn to ride and have fun and maybe do some upgrades over the winter.

You can't let one or two comments from others turn you off. Read what they say and if they make a comment that doesn't agree with your own world view, try to work out where they are coming from and then you can shape your view - whether you agree with the comments or not.

Have fun with your bike, and welcome

teazer, dont get me wrong, im not going to town with a grind and strip job on the bike. I am going to make some modifications to it as i ride it until winter, which i live in iowa so im not going to ride inthe winter, where i can work on it more and get it the way i want it.
But all of that is a huge part of why im here, learning how to do this the right way, where it works as a motorcycle. Im learning all the things that one does to change the ride of the bike and keep it comfortable and workable.

Well said Teazer! The BOTM thread is a little different than most of the others. We sometimes disagree and debate (argue?) like brothers and sisters, but I trust you'll find the forum as a whole, very helpful and encouraging! 8)

I think of you all as family! ;D

And on that note, I'll close this thread so you guys can start the discussion all over for the September BOTM nominations coming shortly ;)
