Australian Laws- Will I have trouble getting my bike on the road?

G'day,

Don't know how I am going to go here as most of the posts in this section are from the US, but I'll give it a crack anyway.

I recently purchased a 1978 xl250s that was used as a farm bike, its pretty bashed up, but I have put a few hours into it so far and I have too many ideas to give up on it now. My only issue is the fear of making an awesome bike that I cant get registered.

The bike has the VIN number still easily visible at the head, but I cant find the small rectangular identification plate (not sure of the real name) that are on most bikes. My question is, can I still get this bike registered in NSW or ACT, Australia if I meet all the other requirements such as headlights, tail lights, indicators etc.?

any help will be great, cheers

This isn't much help but is some hope. I have a 79 XL250 that has been registered by a previous owner.

It might be worth checking if the 78 came with a vin plate as otherwise I believe that they take the frame number. You should be right (in Queensland it would be all good AFIK)

You will need to get a blue slip before getting it registered:

thanks, this is all quite a while away as I have only just finished stripping it down, I still have a lot to go before getting it on the road. If the VIN number is clearly embossed on the head stem and I meet all other requirements and get a blue slip, but I have no VIN plate, is there any reason they may knock me back when trying to get it registered?

Just had a look at mine and there is no VIN plate either. Queensland is quite a bit more lenient than NSW though. Stroker would know what the go is as he is in Sydney.

I have read a few thing dealing with Honda Z50s that might apply and after a bit of searching I found this thread. Hope it helps.

I thought that bikes had to have an ADR compliance plate after a certain point in time, but I could be mistaken.

That helps out a lot!!!! thanks heaps mate. this website is wicked, top people around here

No problem at all. I just saw your exhaust question so I will grab a photo of the setup on mine. It was on there when I bought the bike. I call it the leg warmer.

And Teazer I think it was around 1976 but there is always a grey area of transition in Australia that gets forgotten about by the RTA 30 years later.

Never tried registering a bike minus compliance plate so I have no first-hand knowledge.

Contact the RTA and ask!

Before you do anymore work on it call the RTA, if it's been registered before you shouldn't have too much of a problem, if the VIN is not of file and there is no compliance plate it's going to be tougher if not impossible :( Odds are if it was a farm bike it may not have compliance or have been registered. Worst case scenario pick up another frame (with a complaince on it) and build that up.

Cheers

Also if it comes down to the worst case I know in QLD you can get the police (specifically the officer who deals with stolen vehicles) to write you a surrogate VIN. Just keep the bill of sale handy!
They will look at is and use the engine and frame number to make a compliance plate and as long as it is all road worthy you should not have a problem. You may need to get it engineered if they ask though.

Alright, I'll call both the ACT and NSW RTA (I live on the boarder so I can register for either) and see what they say. If not, I might have a go at mocking up my own compliance plate if it comes down to it. Cheers guys

It is easy to buy blank compliance plates an stamp your own!

That won't help you if the VIN is not registered on the RTA system.

It might help you get some jail time though....

For what it's worth I had an unregistered FZ250 Japanese import that didn't have a VIN plate on it. I rang QLD Transport and they put me onto another Govt department in charge of importations and they sent me a letter saying the bike was officially imported and previously registered in Australia. Got the bike registered and sold it no problem.

Long story short, you don't necessarily need a VIN plate to register a vehicle - but you need to speak to the RTA to find out what documentation you need.

I had some trouble registering a Tinny a while back. I had the numbers but no plate or year. After two attempts I called it a 1969 and that was it. So it sort of depends who you get but make sure you have all the paper work and are more educated than them!

Righto, I called up the ACT RTA today and the process for when the bike is ready for registration is as followed:
1. Get it inspected at an authorised inspection station, I can get it roadworthy at the same time
2. Identity check
3. Rego check
4. pay for registration
despite the bike being 2 years older than the 1976 no compliance plate exeption, the guy seemed hopeful that there wont be any troubles with getting it registered. This gives me enough hope to continue the project. I will update this post once its registered so I can help out others who are in the same boat as me.

cheers

Bvander: im still on the destructive path at the moment and she is in pieces, once I start doing some customising and re-asembling I'll begin a project thread. dont worry I have taken many pictures so far, I love seeing lots of pictures on other peoples threads, so hopefully people are appreciative of mine.

Crazy:yeah, bloody oath it is haha
