Badge mount removal

SaltCityCafe

Been Around the Block
So I searched around a little but didn't find much or my search sucked.

What I am trying to do is remove the badge mounts from my tank then fill and smooth the voids. Mount in question is pictured.

If there is a thread I missed or anyone has some insight I would appreciate.

Ready....GO!

Well bondo will come after removing the mounts. If i just bondo over them then you will be able to see them under the paint pretty easily

I did just bondo on my GS tank, they hide away fairly well. But you are correct, if you are looking for it they will show.

On the GS the mount appear to be tack welded on. I suppose you could use a dremmel to remove the welds.

Either that or use a hammer to recess the mounts so that you can use a slightly thicker layer of bondo.

What about something more substantial than Bondo initially (like epoxy or JB Weld) with Bondo to smooth out the contour (the emblem area on my tank looks flatter than the rounded tank profile)?

That's what I did. JB weld first, then bondo for final blending. Worked fine

just stripped my cb500k tank down to bare metal, seems the only thing that stands proud are the holes for the badge pins, not sure if I should try to take the whole strip off or just grind down those high points and fill, hmmmm, kinda fun to just rip it all down after years of trying to make it pretty, tank looks killer in bare metal but those badge mounts ruin it, hoping to smooth it out and go satin black

decided to try to remove as much of the bar as I could, spot welded on both ends and in the middle, used dremel cut off wheel to cut either side of the middle weld and just inside of both outside welds, leaving only the two outer ends and the middle, ground those down as low as I dared, one side, no problem the other had the bar welded more proud of the tank, after grinding and cutting, yep, you guessed it, too deep, saw daylight, right on through, so I JB welded the hole, hope it holds!
