Battery eliminators?

Anybody here running one? Brand, type, size, where hidden, etc? Sources? Home made set-ups?

I know they are out there still, my bike is kick only with a headlight shut-off switch, not much need for an actual battery...

Love 'em? Hate 'em?
I know what the chopper/bobber crowd thinks...

i didnt know you had to buy something to remove the battery! ;)

If you run lights and an electric start, stock size battery is a must, especially seeing how cruddy most charging systems are on older bikes. if your running kick only, youll still need a battery for the running lights, but you can go to a battery that is much smaller in size as long as it is the correct voltage.

going totally battery less would mean that you couldnt run turn signals, and that your headlight would dim, or shut off, at idle. and you would still need the charging system to run the headlight in the first place, as well as a voltage regulator.

You can use a capacitor in place of the battery (10,000 micro farad) if you want, but generally I'd just recommend a smaller than stock battery. You can get 12v sealed unit batteries down to about 1.2Ah, and they're about the size of a Mars bar. I've also run a 3Ah battery in my Aprilia RS125 with electric start and full lighting since August last year wthout any problems.

Just use a small battery in place of the stock unit. If you plan to race the thing, then maybe its worth ditching it altogether.

Turn signals aren't required on pre-1974 here. Honda's micro-headlights from 1963 are so pathetic to start with...

There are 2 batteries listed for the stock Scrambler version of the bike, small and puny. Size isn't a concern.

Minimalism. I'm going to strip it down as light as is practical.

I can rewire one of these things in my sleep, not much different than my beloved 1930s bikes as far as that goes. I just don't know jack diddly shit about how/why the components work.

Go to Batteries +. You can get a smaller and lighter 12v battery. That's what I did. I've got to fab a tray for the new battery under the seat.

Bit of a long read, but there's some info here http://www.triumphrat.net/club-cafe/113275-gel-batteries.html. There's a nice pic on page 3 of a thrux with no (visible) battery (I'll be doing this to my thruxton soon).

From what I've read, you use 8 (2 x 4 cells) A123 battery cells and a charge balancer (something called an astro blinky). You might also have to replace the regulator/rectifier, but I'm not sure. The battery cells are small enough to fit under the seat, along with all the other stuff usually hanging off the battery box.

I don't know enough about batteries to be sure if it'll work on all bikes/charging systems etc. but maybe a good place to start looking.

what bike? my cb350 runs fine with the battery removed. and when you're rolling there's no problem with even the full light package. that said, with no battery and signals and brake on, you have to keep the revs up so if you come to a stop you have to blip the throttle constantly to keep it from stalling... this isn't practical but is does give you an idea of just how little is required of the battery if you don't have an electric start.

1963 CL72 that was formerly a cafe racer and then converted into a fire road only heap.

I'll probably get the GT4L-BSFP from Autozone. If it will run a kick only 1200cc Shovelhead, it should be overkill on my 248cc Honda...

I was thinking to run a battery eliminator on my SR500...but after a second thought ill run a smaller battery under the seat so that ill have lights even when the bike is not running. And i think that the battery is helping a little bit with the kickstart...correct me if im wrong

One of our members, Hide, has an SR500 with a battery eliminator and he rides tons in the city with no problems. I have an SR500 project on the backburner and got a Bat Pac eliminator cheap to try with it.

If you run a magneto (6v bikes usually) instead of a more modern generating setup then you'll probably be fine.

If you're kick-only with headlamp shut-off then you'll probably be fine as well.

I'd still run a very small battery or capacitor though, as its nice to be able to have other people see your light and/or turn and brake lamps when you're at a standstill. I mean, we're not that visible to start with am I right?

Oregonmotorcycleparts.com. Tony makes the best eliminator setups and is super helpful! He will make you a custom diagram for your application.
