Seriously, people. You are polishing chrome. Use chrome polish, fer fuck sake. Sheesh!
It is formulated specifically to remove/neutralize rust, (phosphoric acid,) and leave a protective coating, similar to waxing it.
You want to change your steel wool pad frequently while you work. Dirt and particles of rust that you have been removing embed in the steel wool and can cause scratches. I sometimes start with a good washing using dishwashing soap and running water to remove dirt and course rust, with the water flushing away the crud, THEN I start with fresh #0000 steel wool and Turtle Wax Chrome Polish.
