best way to clean up rusted chrome?

So what is the most effective cheap way to remove light rust from chrome parts? Does soda really work?
I've used scotchbrite but that scratches the chrome some.

Never, never, never use Scotchbrite on chrome. It scratches the shit out of it.

#0000 steel wool and chrome polish. DO NOT use the steel wool dry. Again, it can scratch just from the rust embedding in it. Chrome polish lubricates, AND has phosphoric acid in it that removes the rust. Change the steel wool frequently.

actually I have used wet steel wool with the soap in it in the past and it worked quite well,...duh.

+1... for the reasons given. AlphaDog is spot on.
Old Body-Shop trick from back when cars had chrome bumpers ;)

I also use #0000 steel wool, but with 3-in-1 oil, as I find the wool lasts longer than if I use chrome polish, and it's far less expensive. Having seen your work, though, iI think you're after a more serious finish. :)

I have not tried it yet but it will happen this week. Check out the link. A 16oz tub of wood bleach is $10 at ACE hardware.

Seriously, people. You are polishing chrome. Use chrome polish, fer fuck sake. Sheesh!
It is formulated specifically to remove/neutralize rust, (phosphoric acid,) and leave a protective coating, similar to waxing it.

You want to change your steel wool pad frequently while you work. Dirt and particles of rust that you have been removing embed in the steel wool and can cause scratches. I sometimes start with a good washing using dishwashing soap and running water to remove dirt and course rust, with the water flushing away the crud, THEN I start with fresh #0000 steel wool and Turtle Wax Chrome Polish.

Going back decades, 0000 steel wool and Turtle Wax Chrome Polish has been my go-to for rusted chrome. Lots of products have been tried and abandoned, but good old, inexpensive Turtle Wax Chrome Polish is always on my shelf.

For some problem areas (fittings, tight corners, etc) I've lightly used a Dremel-type tool with a brass brush...but again, just lightly.

I am going to try out the "wood bleach" method. It is actually oxalic acid which is also in "Bar Keepers Friend" which is a cleanser found at most grocery stores. Afterwards, I will polish it just to put a protectant on it. Will post some results when done.

On badly pitted chrome I used to use Brillo pads (wire wool impregnated with carbolic soap) then follow up with Autosol, for alloy parts Marine Autosol is fairly good (has abrasive particles in it). Autosol leaves a protective coating and wax polishing can remove it, so unless you live in a very dry area, or are showing the bike leave the Autosol to do it's work.

I know I have seen your posts before, but this is the first time your name actually sunk in.
Funny shit right there.

+1 for aluminum foil. I've heard of people using the foil with Coca-Cola. I put a little phosphoric acid in water to lube the foil. The wad of foil is the trick.

I must be doing something wrong cuz when i tried the aluminum foil it scratched the chrome up good. Now it was on the back of a mirror so I don't know if the chrome is weaker there or it was just in that bad of shape. Alot of people swear by that method tho. Just recieved some oxalic acid in the mail this weekend. I'll be soaking some parts this week. I'll post the results as soon as possible.
