Bike shifts without pulling clutch

Been Around the Block
I have a '72 CB350 that's having a clutch issue. I can go start the bike in neutral, then actually put it in gear without pulling the clutch. The neutral switch is working fine as the light is only on when I'm in neutral. But if the bike is off, I can flip between 1st and 2nd without engaging the clutch.

The clutch works fine once I'm moving. Meaning It starts to drag just fine, I can take off just fine, and go through the gears just fine. I've read tons of how-to's on adjusting the clutch and cable. I have good tention and the handle, I can see that the cable is being pulled on both ends when I engage the handle, but somehow the tranny let me shift gears without the handle being pulled in. Anyone ever hear of this before?

Thanks

That's the case on most - if not all - bikes. When the engine isn't running and there's no load on the clutch, you should be able to transition between gears without using the clutch.

Yes actually!

Every bike can shift without the clutch haha there's no mechanism (apart from common sense) to prevent it.

I almost always shift my jeep without the clutch, you jut have to know the Rpms where the gears align and it's just as smooth as the clutch

Ya I discovered that when my clutch cable snapped on my bike I figured out the butter zone for rpms and wasn't to bad of a ride home, just made sure I didn't come to a complete stop ;D

I have a feeling this may be more than that. If I'm in neutral and the bike is running, I can click it into first without the clutch in. The bike obviously surges forward at that point, but I can imagine that is supposed to be the case.

That sounds perfectly normal.
Like I said the only mechanism preventing this is common sense.

Don't do it. It's bad for every part of your bike. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

If I hold the throttle pinned for 10 minutes while sitting still my bike will overheat and seize, doesn't mean it's broken :)

Though this is telling me I'm the idiot, it's still a great feeing to hear there's nothing wrong, haha

Thanks everybody
