Black and Gold Cafe - 71 CB350

Hello DTT,
Long time lurker, first time poster here. I got bit by the motorcycle bug a while ago after spending a weekend trail riding dirt bikes with my gf and her family. Unfortunately I live in the urban paradise of the Detroit Metro area, so my trail riding options are limited. I stumbled on a few pictures of café racers on the net, and I was hooked. I decided to start looking for a CB350 for my first bike and as a café project.

So this is the bike I found for my project. It’s a 1971 Honda CB350 that I picked up in October 2011. It’s a little rough around the edges aesthetically, but runs well and was the right price, and the previous owner brought it to my house on his trailer (I don’t have a truck/trailer and no motorcycle endorsement at the time). It had a few electrical gremlins when I bought it, but nothing relating to it running properly. After painting the terrible red side covers flat black, and replacing the rear wheel/tire with one that didn’t have dry rot and had a decent sprocket (both included in the sale by the PO, see the picture of the old one, yikes!), I was off and riding.

I rode it around stock for the last few weeks of reasonable weather here, and then brought it inside for some work over the winter.

Unfortunately, my car decided to have a few things break one right after another, and combining that with road trips and the holidays, nothing really got done on the CB. Finally a little over a week ago I was able to get started.

I got the whole thing stripped down to a bare frame, and started de-tabbing and seam welding. I decided to leave the center stand mounts on there for now, so that I can use it for future work if I want. I’m painting the frame instead of powdercoat, so if I want to modify something in the future I can touch it up a lot easier.

Plan is to do a fairly standard cafe conversion, and rewire the whole bike with more modern components wherever possible, and then spend the summer riding it. I'm trying to keep things simple for now, so hopefully I can be done in time for most of the riding season here.

More elaborate build plan:
Phase 1 - hoping to finish this up end of April. Get the bike resotred and mildly cafe-ed (is that how you spell that?). I'm trying to do a good job on all the components that are difficult to get too (like the frame, wiring harness, etc...). Easier components will be reinstalled as-is to get the bike running and riding quickly.

Phase 1.5 - will be happening this summer. This will be doing the weekend projects to finish out the resto-mod. Things like new tires, cleaned up and painted wheels, new rear shocks, etc...

Phase 2 - winter 2012/13. Take everything back apart, get the frame sandblasted and powdercoated (assuming I'm happy with it and won't be adding anymore brackets), full engine rebuild with more power! and possibly a more modern front end. Not sure If i want to go full out with inverted forks or maybe just something still vintage looking but better than the stock early 350 forks, like 550 forks or similar.

More soon!

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

Thanks!

Got a little more work done last night, cleaned up a few seams and getting them ready for welding. Ordered a new rectifier/regulator from an 02 CBR600, and started looking for a CB350F tank.

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

Little more seam welding done last night. I can only spend an hour or so on it in the evenings, so it's a slowly but surely process.

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

Eventually, I'm thinking the basic color scheme will be Black and Silver or Brushed Aluminum for most of the components, with some burnt gold/bronze/orange accents here and there. For the tank/seat I'm thinking matte silver with gold and blue pinstriping, or possibly a blue tank with silver/gold/black pinstriping. Still not completely decided, but something along those lines. Kinda like an Exile bike, but with a little more color.

Initially, the tank will be whatever color it comes as if the paint is halfway decent, with a black seat. Not sure when I'll get to painting it. Looking for a CB350F tank.

Also, got my reg/rectifier today, and took a quick pic of that and also the Loaded Gun Rearsets and linkage kit.

I also got my black plastic sheet I'll be using to make the electronics tray under the seat, and possibly also the splashguard for the rear tire.

Anybody running a flat splashguard across this hole in the frame? Any issues with tire rub or anything? I was originally thinking i would weld some tabs on the tubes, and have the plastic sit against the front of the tubes, getting it as far away from the tire as possible, but I'm still not sure if I will have clearance to the tire or not. Do i even really need a rear tire splashguard? I'm not planning on any rain riding. Thanks for any and all input!

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

The rear splashguard isn't absolutley mandatory. However, you say you aren't planning on riding in the rain..
believe me, sometimes you end up just a little ways from home and the rain can show up out of nowhere. (At least here in Wisconsin it does!) You definitely don't want to soak your air filters with water. That is the main concern. You could easily design a guard that removes quickly- when you're sure you wont' get wet. As for clearance, I'd compress the suspsension and see how far the wheel travels. Make note of where the tire is, and work with that. Have fun!

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

There are many creative things you can do as far as a splash guard. I don't plan on riding in the rain, but the tire will throw up road debris and junk that gets deposited on the engine, so that why I am incorporating one on mine.

madmatt1 had a great point that you can design it to remove quickly. A very easy way to make one is to use the original fender and relocate the mounts like it did. That way you don't have to worry about clearance with a flat one.

And you can shape the fender or move it around to make it look how you want. Here was my inspiration on that aspect.

The great thing is it is easier removable by two bolts right under the seat. In the end though, its all what works with the way you want to build it.

I like that fender bracket! I'm not really gonna have anymore time to work on it until next week, but I'll be able to check the tire clearance then, and if a flat plate won't work i think that or something like it will be my plan.

Thanks!

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

I spent most of the weekend out of town, but got back a little early tonight so got some garage time in. My new steering stem bearings came in the mail, and I got a cardboard template of my electrics tray made, and also tacked in some brackets for it.

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

Didn't really get anything done tonight, but did figure a few things out.

Put the swingarm in to check on the rear tire travel, and with the rear axle as far forward as it will go, it would bottom out on my flat splashguard when the rear shocks are at about 11in long, only compressed about 2 inches. I haven't taken the shocks apart to see what their compressed length is it, but I'm betting that the tire is gonna mash into a flat splashguard, so looks like I'm gonna be modding the fender a bit.

IMG_1508.jpg

Set the right side rear set on and installed the brake lever to start figuring out the new brake linkage. The engineer in me isn't a huge fan of hooking the rear set straight to the brake rod because as the rear tire moves up and down it could cause the rear brake to go on or off depending on how the wheel was moving. Probably not actually a problem in the real world, and I'm creating a bunch of extra work for myself, but whatever.

Plus I like the look of rod ends and linkages, so I want the look of this side to kinda match the shifter side.

IMG_1507.jpg

I took some measurements and put it in CAD so I can move the linkages around and figure out how long my lever arm needs to be. This is all really rough so i'll have to put a couple different mounting points in it so I have some adjustment. I'll do that tomorrow during lunch or something at work.

I also put the left side rear set on temporarily to see how much room I would have to the kick stand. Looks like I'm gonna have to figure something out to move it either forward a ways or somehow out of the way of the way of the rearset. Any suggestions?

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

Ran out of welding gas, so wasn't able to get too much done tonight.

I decided to ditch the plastic electrics tray idea, so I cut out the mounting tabs I had tacked in and used my template to make a sheet steel version. All trimmed up and ready for welding as soon as my tank is refilled.

IMG_1510.jpg

I also trimmed the rear fender to fit closer to the stock seat. I need to weld some additional mounting tabs on the frame as the front mount that rests on the tool holder thingy is getting cut off, I'm using that bracket to mount my new Reg/Rect.

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

Welcome to DTT!

Looks like you have a great looking project going on. There are a few of us in the Detroit Metro area that have Honda Twins. We need to start a meet this season or something.

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

Thanks!

I would be definitely be down for a meet or ride sometime. I'm not exactly sure when this will be rideable, but hopefully sooner rather than later.

Didn't get anything done tonight, I got this in the mail for my car today so spent the evening after work fooling around with that instead of working on my bike. Don't worry, I'll get my priorities back in order tomorrow! haha

But, motorcycle related, i got a package of goodies today as well! Kinda hard to see it all, but it's black clubmans, bar end mirrors, LED taillight, and LED blinkers.

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

If I got Accessport in the mail I would be out tuning also! I don't blame you. What year Scoobie?

Clubmans are nice, I have them on my GS650.

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

Haha, I have an 02 WRX. I wasn't actually doing any tuning, I don't have that software. I was just playing around with the car on the Stage 2 tune from Cobb, and playing with the launch control feature a bit. I didn't do any hard launches, but it's fun to play with the rev limiter setting at lights :) I blew second gear on my old Subaru (01 2.5RS) pulling into a parking lot, so I try to be careful with the Subie transmissions nowadays.

And because I'm a sucker for any excuse to post pics, check below for current and old Subie pics

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

Thank you!

Another evening of no progress, we had some nasty weather here in SE michigan last night, so I was in no mood to be out working in my rickety garage. No damage near me though, so that's a relief.

Some good news however, received my bronze swingarm bushings yesterday, so now I should have everything I need to get it back to a rolling chassis. Hoping to get that done before next Friday, as I'm busy all next weekend and will be traveling for work the week after, so I really want to make some good progress before that.

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

I'm a little north of you in Lake Orion. All that shit weather kind of went around me. It was weird, but I'll take any break I can get. Gave me extra time to organize the garage and leave the door open to maneuver. I'm going to pick my bike up from my buddies garage in Waterford this evening (his is heated, mine isn't) and I needed the room.

Give me a hollar if you need any help with the bike. I have few useful skills, but I'm more than able to stand around, drink your beer, nod, and say "yep".

Re: First Cafe - 71 CB350

Hey Korsch, let me know how those bushings are installing. I'm thinking about picking up some of those.

Glad everyone dodged to weather for the most part, we didn't get anything in Auburn Hills.
