Black bomber

Been Around the Block
been a while since I've been on the forum, but winter months r upon us and i thought take a stop by. A fellah I work with at the bike shop offered me an interesting bike the other day. A 1967 Honda 450 Black Bomber. \i did soem research on it and noticed that these lil beasts can rev up to 10,000 and can hit up to 102mph! pretty damn good for a 450! I watched a video on youtube about them and the guy mentioned a hemi style head?? anyone care to elaberate on this? I guess the current owner had aquired it about 5 or 6 years ago, had it tuned and inspected and the tank lined then and only drove it for a couple weeks before storing it in his basement. Sounded like it was in pretty decent shape apart from a few lil rust spots and a tear in the seat. he said it's not really for sale, but he'd sell it to me cause he knew that I would appreciate it and actually do something with it. said he'd sell it to me for 1200$ give or take a few bucks. Anyone have any knowledge or interesting facts on these beasts? man I sure love the look of them! very cool little ride...with some umph! Was wondering what one of these would go for if it was properly restored? i know I have never seen one around here...ahvent even heard of one before the last week...ive just always seen the honda dreams and cb 175/250 etc. from that era. anyways lemme know what you think?!

cheers - Tunz

Those are great bikes....
I would actually love to get my hands on one of those, and if it's in good shape like he says, then it is well worth the 1200 in my opinion... I've seen ones on ebay that are in decent shape go for around 3000 or more, but they don't show up that often. I say grab it if you can.

same thing as a cb450, made for a few years. just different look.

yes; 10,000 rpm is possible.

1965 - 1967 are known as KO black bombers, then 68(k1) to 74(K7) is a slightly updated version has some improved manufacturing techniques, makes a few more HP, then in 75 and 76 they stroked it and made a few changes and it was now called a cb500t. there is also a CL450 which is very similar but with drum brakes and a high exhaust.

The 65 - 67 where a special bike when they came out, yes they are a Hemi,(domed pistons) very wide valve angle, dual overhead cams. Torsion bar valve springs, 10,000 rpm. the design was inspired by F1 technology of the day. Just the size was also very unique a few years before the CB750 the early 450's had 100cc's on the competition.

depending what your looking to do, a K0 may not be your best candidate. If your looking for a bike to restore then its not so bad but if your looking to cut it up and cafe the thing i would look for a newer one, the K0's are a bit rare and most in the circles will frown on cutting it up. Your better bet is to look for a 68-74 which are much more plentiful and cheaper to aquire.

Eh... if anyone gives you shit for cutting it up, you can sick our resident ankle biter on him, VonYinzer... haha

haha, well I dont really plan on cuttin it up really...prob just change up the bars and maybe a different seat. Gonna do a restoration as well, just not in the traditional style of bringing everything back to original honda stuff. Gonna make it like I want it, but it will still have its classic look. Hopefully will be pickin it up within the next week or two! Pretty stoked. I have a sportster that I use as my main driver, so this is just gonna be a fun lil sunday driver scoot to rip around with the vintage club we got goin here! But dont worry I will test it good! haha. Some people are prob gonna laugh when I ask this, but i dont really give a shit! haha Anyone know of any performance upgrades I could do to this lil beast? Be sweet to hop it up just a lil bit. Thinkin maybe some mikuni carbs and possibly an electronic ignition of possible that is. lemme know what you think!...as far as caring weather someone frowns upon cuttin up a bike...i dont..c'est la vie...but even I know it would be a shame to hack this one!

thanks guys

was thinkin of possibly even gettin one of the dimestore cafe seats for the bomber...but they are out of stock for now....pretty sweet lookin seat, love that style

It was already mentioned, but it bares repeating. If it's really a Ko with hump back whale tank with chrome panels and is in reasonable condition, I'd restore it to stock. They look great and are starting to fetch good money. Mess with it an it's another messed up old bike, worth not very much at all.

If you get my drift.

If you are not into the restored scene, then I'd clean it up and try to sell it for slightly more than you are paying for it and get a later bike with disk brake and cafe that. Late CB450's don't hod their value, so you wouldn't lose much on a later one.

Well thats the thing, the electronic ignition was just a spur of the moment thought, that wont be happenin. Otherwise just changin up the bars and the seat etc. wont depreciate the value cause I will keep the originals if i ever come to sell the bike...an hour in the shop and bam, back to stock. The bars might even be fine, most pics i see of em seam to have lower style bars. It is indeed a black bomber 1967, chrome tank panels and even has chrome side covers. havent seen it in person yet, but prob gonna check er out next week sometime. See wat kind of shape its actually in. I know he had it on the road for a bit a few years back, so at least I have that! Would be a fun restore. Just might have a few simple changes to suit me while I have it!

cheers
