Gathering up all the parts for my '76 BMW R90 cafe project
Looking for some nice S/S mufflers/exhaust, and black wheels with S/S spokes. Don't have the budget (1200-1500) to send mine out to get rebuilt and powdercoated.
If you have anything else for a BMW cafe let me know. I may be interested.
I just did my R75/6 wheels. Replaced the spokes with s/s Buchanan spokes, did the sealed bearing swap at Woody's Wheel Works in Colorado, put new AVON RoadRiders on them.
Here's the breakdown:
$200 Spokes
$100 Lace and true wheels by local wheel builder
I also had the hubs worked on by Woody's to get rid of all the tapered bearing hassle and put fresh tires on.
$270 Woody's Wheel Works sealed bearing conversion / bead blast and clear coat hubs - both front and rear
$300 AVON RoadRiders installed/balanced
So that's $300 for new spokes with the wheels laced/trued. If you weren't replacing your tires, it would run you $60 or so to have the tires removed and re-installed. Powdercoating the two rims would likely run $100, and another $100 for the hubs if you were doing those too.
$600 or so and you're all done. Add another $600 for the bearings and new tires and you're at $1200.
You're not likely to find a set of wheels with powdercoated rims and stainless spokes for any less than $600.
Where did the $1200-$1500 estimate come from? Am I missing something?
Estimates was from woodys and buchanen. Woodys would be the cheaper route since there closer. I want to say they quoted me about 700 per wheel for new seals and bearings, spokes, and Powdercoating. I'll have to dig through my emails to see what it was exactly.
Tons of guys out there (including some on this site) who will powdercoat for you, and you just need to find a local guy who laces wheels - find your local AHRMA racers and they'll all use the same guy
Woody's and Buchanan's would make you awesome wheels, but Woody's charges $100 for the bearings/seals, spokes are $100 per wheel and lacing should be $50 or so. Powder might add $100 per wheel, perhaps $150 if it's rim and hub. So that's $400. Not sure where the other $300 is going - might want to ask them That's either some seriously expensive powdercoating or they charge way too much to lace and true a wheel.
