Braided Stainless brake lines for older bikes??

zixxerboy

Been Around the Block
I'm thinking the 30 year old brake lines (Flex hose) on my '79 650 could be replaced. I'd consider NOS rubber or braided stainless.
Does anyone sell a pre made SS kit for the KZ? Buying the bit and having them swaged seams like a hassle.

I checked Galfer & Goodridge - niether list a kit for the KZ650. Goodridge has parts that appear to screw together (no swaging) which I could use but I'd prefer a ready made kit.

Thanks

...Not sure about pre-made lines for your application. But I just ordered 2 stainless lines to run a 2001 R6 master cylinder on my stock dual discs. The guy who makes them here locally does them for the cost of the lines and fittings and puts them together for free.

Looks like I'll be dropping about $150.00

He says measure the lines from the cylinder straight to the caliper(s) and add 2 inches, then just see if you need straight, 20 deg or 90 deg at each point. Then it's 12 bucks a foot for the lines (clear plastic coated braided stainless) and $25-$30 for the fittings... except the 90 deg fittings are 60 bucks... so you don't need those. :D

I'd say there is probably someone in your area with the same kind of deal... probably better as I live in a bit of an expensive area when it comes to most bike things. Otherwise I'd be happy to go talk to him about lines for a KZ when I get mine tomorrow or Saturday.

WOWS that is recockulously expensive! My 32 inch line cost 22 bucks. the fittings were like 9 bucks each i think.

ive been looking for the exact same thing for the exact same bike and found nothing yet. So if you find anything let me know so I can get one too.

Ton Up , where did you get those? I've been to Earl's and Russell's websites but could not figure out what the F was going on. Couldn't find priceing, descriptions or numbers for indiviual parts. Huge piss off.

I've been talking to a guy to have custom ones made for my XS650. He's charging $29 per line.

Nice.
Makes me hate the fact that there's ONE custom shop here...

Actually, he sells braided lines on eBay. I emailed the seller directly he didn't have my make/model on eBay and he quoted $29/line

wow... the only lines I could find on ebay were the same as what the dude quoted me locally... Should have posted here first.

I'll try and convince myself that it's worth it anyway... Lately I've become sick of e-bay...
Right now I have way too much into my front brake setup, so after the brake fluid this is the cutoff... until I can figure out a complete modern system swap, lol.

Just be glad your not redoing my GS. Six lines, (32", 18", 18", 15", 12" & 12") Seven fittings ($60), five bleeders, three double banjos, and six reg banjos. Whole thing set me back about $240, or something like that :p
