"Brat-Style" Bikes.

maybe you should change your user name to neo-teazer

it bratstyle! and bratstyle it will be..it is nothing more or nothing less!

Swagger, that was good.

As to what a cafe racer is or is not, I made reference to a Wiki definition, which is not mine but is an open discussion format and therefore in theory at least represents the majority description. Not necessarily my opinion.

What a few people on this board are doing is to say - to heck with anyone else's definitions, we want to create bikes that don't meet any of those criteria and we want to call them cafe racers or any other term. And that's all fine, but it doesn't mean it's right. It just is what it is.

On "Brat Style", I suggested that maybe people may like to consider whether they are aware of the unintended consequence of building links and credibility for one custom shop. Why not Deus Style for example. Why choose a name that inadvertently builds credibility for one shop. Just making people aware that things we do sometimes have unintended consequences. Sorry if you didn't get that point.

To refer to a tank for example as Dime City style for example builds google links for Dime city which is cool, but it's sometimes useful to remember that.

As for my opinion - it's just that. My opinion. I don't ask that others share my personal beliefs or demand that anyone else agrees. I simply tell it like I see it. I believe that the constitution allows for such freedom of expression and I wopuld hope this forum encourages it.

BTW, I don't "race" in the canyons of Illinois or anywhere else, so maybe that characterization is slightly off, but that's all cool. You are entitled to your opinion and to express it.

And the use of the "Neo" was an open and honest attempt to invite people to think about what that style is and what it represents. It was not a recommendation - just a place to start people thinking. What you call it is, at the same time, not important and very important at different levels. I don't have a dog in this fight. All I wanted to do was to add to the discussion, but it seems that some members of the forum think that anyone that suggests something different, is attacking them and they get defensive. That's a shame if their minds are so closed.

How about DTT style. That resonates a little better.

Bottom line is that I don't build cafe bikes or any other style. I build customs and race bikes and I could care less about labels, but I'm happy to discuss things with anyone with any perspective.

Let's just add this to the list of what makes this forum and it's members great. In the posts above, swagger and teazer are have an open debate and a bit of a disagreement on certain labels. As opposed to this become a huge flame session they are intelligently discussing each others views and where they differ while maintaining plenty of respect for one another. Way to keep it clean and concise gentlemen.

Priscilla queen of the desert : "so what kind of bike do you ride big boy...?"
djelliott: "its a DTT-Style bike.. babe..."
Priscilla queen of the desert : "ooohh.. THATS HOT... take me to the mens room NOW!!"..

It's interesting and awfully sad that opposing point of view can no longer be expressed and conversed upon without someone's bits getting bunched. What happened to the art of discourse?
For the record, I'm sorry you took my disagreeing with you as a personal attack, that is the one reason why I reworded my previous response. However, 'closed minded'? Please...I think all can agree that that's the domain of another web forum than this, if that's the best retort you can come up with when someone doesn't fall in line with what YOU insist....then perhaps some self examination is in order? Since this has tipped somewhat to the personal, I think it interesting that while you DO participate here with minimal carping, you do seem willing to join the collective 'eye rollers' on "that other site", specifically toward DTT and the builds and tastes that come out of this joint. Duality sir?
Reread:

thinly veiled.....really. Look at your own subtext Teaz, I think if you're as open minded as you say you can hardly miss what's really being said here....

As to why Deus hasn't garnered it's own 'style'....perhaps it's because they haven't created anything that resonated (for whatever reason spins your gizmo) with anyone as deeply as one little shop in Japan. Personally I find Deus' et al to be glaringly derivative and thus, not worthy of any particular singularity. 'Johnny Come Lately' if you will. 'Also Ran'...if it suits you better.

As for driving hits fairly or not to http://www.bratstyle.com/, why not? This shop did create the momentum if you will. Lots of little joints all over Japan turn out neat little bikes for bombing around the city, but this one shop rose juuuust high enough to get noticed and that's generally all it takes. Nobody would piss and moan about someone building a Dunstal style bike? Or a Seeley style or a Boardtrack style bike, et all...ad nauseum.

.....and I could care less about labels....
Hmm....seems quite the opposite actually.

But that brings us back to what the heck to call these particular abominations with fat wheels, no performance etc. Do we have so little imagination that we can't come up with a label other than to claim they are like the ones made by Mr Bratt in Kyoto. He simply followed a similar style to many others.

There must be a better name for the general bobber style, or should they all be classified as bobbers because they fit that description? Just because we say they are Cafe racers doesn't make them cafe racers now does it? Oh I forgot. That's exactly what the republicans have been doing for years, and it seems to work for them.

Seriously though - Neo bobbers. It has to be.
Really? Your position appears to be fairly fluid, do you work in politics? <it's humor folks>

This has been a somewhat entertaining joust, and for those who missed it...I'm feeling jousty today. Probably not enough coffee yet. But just the same, I think I'll continue to call these little rigs 'Brat Style'. It just works well, pays homage where homage is due and is nearly universally accepted....that is until someone comes up with something more compelling.
I miss 8th grade debate class........

Touche! I earned that one.

Swagger, No worries mate, we're just exploring an idea. You feel it's appropriate to attribute a style to one shop and that's a valid opinion. I didn't and that as I said, is just my opinion.

I have no axes to grind with you or anyone else, so I hope that last reply of mine didn't come across as defensive. It wasn't meant that way. In fact the reference to closed minds (not my words) was to another poster. I've been around way too long to get bent out of shape by animated discussion. But I do admit that I really enjoy an exchange of views with people who actually think about the issues.

Now where are the pictures of my old T100 cafe racer from when cafe racers were already out of style. Built in about 1969 and destroyed in around 1972 by the next owner who kept the motor and built it into a featherbed frame :( :)

People build their cultures by huddling together, nervously loquacious, at the edge of an abyss.

Just show me the pictures so I can figure out how I want my bike to look hahah
