cafe bike title conundrum

Story:
When I bought the bike I bought it from a fellow "titled" I have the paper title in hand. It's a PA title. When i was buying the bike though i notice it's not in his name but it is signed by the title holder. And there is a signature there. Now i am like crap but i have a huge lot of parts and it's only 400 bux so i am like what have i got to loose. I buy it take the title home.

So here I am several hundred dollars and hundred hours later with a really nice cafe bike that i am dieing to ride on the street but i can't see how i can get this thing legal. Retrospect is 20/20 .

Situation:
I have a pa title with an un notorized signature by 2 owners ago person. I have a bill of sale. I have 2 frames. I built my bike on the untitled frame just in case this title thing turned sour they can just confiscate my frame. I need to get this title transfered to my name. I am thinking the only thing to do is try and locate this person whose name is on the title and hope they would be willing to meet and get it notorized. That or i need to find a notary who would not mind notorizing it without said individual present.

any suggestions as i am sick of riding around my neighborhood.

Yeah that was my plan but i am having a hard time getting anyone to agree to doing this thing. I know people gotta watch their own ass and be careful what they sign their name to. IDK this sucks nuggets.

nah it's def not stolen. I will see if i can get a title search in done and in writing so a notary may feel more inclined. in the condition i got it in i don't think anyone would steal it even if you left it outside with keys downtown with a gastank full of drugs.

you are in Ohio? You are screwed.
Even if you got the title notarized, the person who bought it and signed the back of the title has to put it into their name (and pay tax).
You are better off tossing the title and going with one of the places that advertise that they can get a title out of state.

I was in the same boat as you, I wound up just buying another bike with a good title. It was the easiest option. But I did this BEFORE I put any effort into my bike.

BTW, in Ohio, every person at the BMV that I spoke to about my bike with no title basically assumed that it had to be stolen and offered no help at all.

The person i bought it from never signed the title it was never in their name. The title is in the name of the person who owned it prior and signed by them with no specific date or price. the only writing on the title is their signature. so no sir i am not screwed i just need a notary who will notarize the signatures.

I looked up the PA statute and a notary is definitely required to transfer a PA title. Ohio's title system is a bitch but one good thing is they have to follow the title rules of the issuing state. So, for some cool states like Michigan you could get away without the notary (since MI doesn't require it), but not in your case unfortunately. I would do your best to track down the guy on the title and find a notary who is willing to talk to him and verify that he signed over the title to you. That should be enough to get them to notarize the signature. If you can't find anybody to do it in Kent I could probably help you out (I am an attorney and notary in Wooster, OH).

The POs address is on the title. Mail them a letter asking if they'll help before you do anything drastic (and somewhat non-legal haha).

yeah man i am gonna try to contact him. I hope i can get a hold of them. Another crazy thing barn burner pointed out was that i built the bike on the untitled frame. Ohio requires an vin inspection of the vehicle for all out of state titled vehicles. Now from what i understand all they do is look at the vin to make sure it matches the bike. What i am thinking is that i just take the frame to the inspection and tell them i bought the bike as a project (which i did technically). I wonder if they will make me get a salvage title then? ah hell wyatt.

here in pa i use aaa ,,,but one bike i had in pieces i called them and said id torn the bike down and do i need it all assembled or bring all the parts w me for the vin verification ( by them ) they said frame only was ok

I like the idea of having them inspect just the frame. That way you don't have to trailer the bike to the license agency. However, you still would have to switch everything over to the titled frame or you run the risk of getting that beautiful cafe impounded.

I'm in the same situation, except my vins don't match up :-X There's an 8 on the frame where the title says there should be a 0. I'm assuming this is some sort of clerical error? I'm REALLY excited to go to the BMV and have them look at me like I have three heads.

I believe their is a title place in Maine. All you need is a bill of sale. I will see if I still have the www address tomorrow. It's been awhile but I believe they will issue a Maine title and then you transfer that to your state. Might be easier than switching parts or contacting the PO. In IL I had to get a bonded title for 3 years and then it was free and clear. Some states suck trying to get a title.

Oh man... That's going to be a real tough situation. The previous title should still be on record though, so hopefully with some time and a million or two phone calls/emails you'll get it sorted. ;)

Good luck!

Thanks!

I might take the easy way out and have diesel work his title voodoo. I'll have to see what the BMV has to say about my predicament.

Well I found a place that will inspect just the frame for the vin. The BMV was all like i have to have the complete bike to have the vin inspected. Went to my local motorcycle dealer they said they would do it no problem. Unable to contact PO at this point. THis blows all i need is someone to notorize this thing.

I think this may be the answer to your problem.

yeah i pm'd deisel a while ago but haven't heard back from him. I would just have the frame the bike is built up on titled that way if it were that easy.
