cafe matty / oldskool fairing

Coast to Coast
I have been searching but have yet to find details on how to achieve a simlilar fairing effect. Has anyone seen a detailed write up on creating a similar aluminum fairing? Closest thing I have found has been the Deus fairing for a rediculous amount of money.

What gauge aluminum is this? How do you create a uniform shape? how do you keep for getting hammer marks in the shape? Do you have to have a full metal working knowledge to achieve something of this nature?

Re: cafe matty fairing

Have you tried PM'ing him? He's quite a regular on here...cafematty is his screenname.

Re: cafe matty fairing

Nah Gary, that's Junior's handywork. His screen name is oldschool here.

He was at barber's, and has offered his bad ass fab skills to DTT.

Re: cafe matty fairing

I wasn't sure if it was the same cafe matty (although how many could there be).

Junior does some kick ass work for sure. I was more interested in whether someone could attain the basic tools and skills to pull this off and how. I am fairly certain i wouldn't like the price tag..LOL However if junior chimes in I may know for sure either on here or via pm.

I see things like this and I am interested in learning the skill.

Thanks guys for the nice words, already pmed on info but if anyone has questions or needs advice on fab feel free to ask.

With this thread, I think we are all asking :) How about an FAQ?

Get a hammer or 10, shot bag, planishing hammer, english wheel, possibly a shrinker/stretcher, a few years of experience, and a vision and you've got it!

LOL You make it sound so simple. ;)

It is an amazing skill for sure! Junior does awsome work.

When I hear things like a metal shrinker I start to think of magic. I am a Loooooooong way off from creating anything like this. But a guy has to start the learning somewhere.

I am sure I get the same look on my face as when I send some of my dock workers looking for a trailer stretcher.

is sending someone to look for a trailer stretcher the same as sending someone out to get a gallon of prop wash?

Exactly the same sort of futile search. ;D

I hate feeling this clueless when it comes to the metal working/ internal engine stuff. Its coming slowly though. Just so much you can't learn without the right tools and experiance. I envy junior, Brad and some of the others. Wish I had grown up learning the knowledge or having a local mentor to help teach some of this stuff.

I have picked up some hammers, a shot bag is next and then the planishing hammer. Maybe a wheel if I have room for it. I figure by the time I retire I might be able to make something that looks better than Animal from the Muppets beat out.

All I had was pure determination and the passion to do it. All you have to do is start working on a skill and do it and research it and it will happen. Get a welder and a bunch of scrap and weld til its good. I've taught myself how to do mostly everything. Then it just starts snowballing.

or in my case fake it till ya make it

have always found my problem to be time! My day starts out with waking up at 6:30am, 45 minute commute, work 8 hours, go work out, 45 minute commute, home, 1-2 hours to for dinner, wife time, motorcycle time, and dancing with the stars (just kidding!). The only time I have is weekends and that only allows enough time to become familiar with any artform. Believe me, there are times I wish I could walk away from "realjob" and spend hours in the garage, but who knows that may happen! My wife is in medical school ;)

So at least for the time being, instead of making it, I will stare and continue to be drop jawed at some of the beautiful metal work on this site.

I work 45-50 hrs a week at my day job, another 30-40 hrs on bikes in the shop. Bring my kids on the weekends spend an hour with the kids and an hour with the wife every weeknight. In bed by 11:00 up by at 5:00. One Sunday a month I rest and just hang with the family. Stay active in local DTT community with meetups and rides, and some how keep up with the social networking and friends all over the country. My point is that its possible, just depends on how much you want it. A major key factor is my wife and kids get it and support me to the fullest and couldn't do it without them. Kanticoy thanks brother, and yes that is also a factor.

Amen to that!
