Cafe seat / race tails for sale RD350 DS7 R5 etc. other small bikes

Been Around the Block
So I'm posting this up as a feeler to see if anybody would be interested in buying a seat like the one I made for my bike. Basically I just have this nice mold waiting for me to produce some parts with. It is a perfect fit for the RD R5/DS7 range, but will fit many smaller bikes. I can provide the measurements. The one I made for myself turned out nice, there was a little bit of work needed once it came out of the mold, but not too much. This style of seat would be perfectly suited for a race/track bike or a custom cafe project since it requires modification of battery placement and some fabrication to mount. Also, the way they will be made allows 2 styles for the rear. Either an upswept look of the Laguna Seca, or a boxed in look. Here is a picture of the mold plug to give an idea:

As you can see the rear is boxed in on the mold, thus giving a period look and making it easier to mount a taillight/plate.
I chose to not have the boxed end and cut it at an angle to give an upswept look like so:

I formed the the plug for the mold directly on the frame, so it sits over the frame rails perfectly, when the original seat mounts are removed. You could mount it with the original hinges, but it would sit up higher and not look as clean. It will be up to you how to mount it but I can provide how I did it, which makes removing very quick and easy.

Also, I would provide a seat pan for making the actual foam/upholstered part, like so:

I choose to just velcro it down and it works great. But it could be bolted to the tailpiece if wanted.

Here's mine all painted up :

Seats will have white gel coat and sufficient layers of quality US Composites polyester resin and combo mat and cloth glass for strength. The seats are very light overall.

So that's about it. Just trying to make a little money doing what I love to do...so I can turn around and build more cool things! As far as price, I am not sure yet, but I am positive I can easily beat Airtech's. Thanks for any interested, comments, suggestions, feedback, gripes, etc! Thanks!

Also wanted to add, that if people arent too psyched on the Laguna Seca look, I am thinking of using the stock tank as a model and replicating the shape of the back portion and combining it with the front portion of my seat...and making a new mold so ill have another style available. It would look just like this one that used an actual tank and cut/welded it into a seat. I will change it up a bit so as not to step on any toes, but I don't think Twinline offers that seat for sale. So along these lines...flows well:

looks like a great looking piece. If I had a bike to fit one up to I would defenitly pick one up. Good luck!!!

Nice work!

Can you give me the dimensions:

1. overall length
2. length of actual seat area
3. width at tank
4. width at bump stop

5. Price

I have a couple little CBs that need seats.

Ilike your style- picked this set up a few months ago, has similar lines on the tail when boxed:

I would call this a small seat, because it was built RD specific...and an RD is pretty darn tiny. It's not going to fit on a CB750 or anything, but small twins and singles probably.

Dimensions are as follows:

1. Total length tip to tip: 25 3/4 in
2. Seating area: 13 1/2 in
3. Width:
at tank(underside that fits over frame rails; add about 3/8" to total for outside dimension): 6" at tank tapers out to 7 1/2 at bump and goes out to 8" just past that tapers back to 7 1/2 at the end
4. bump is 6" tall
5. top of bump to end of little flair on back is 9 1/4 long

For prices, I am playing with numbers now...but I am thinking the basic boxed in shaped $75, for one cut with the swoop $100 and pans would be like an extra $10. Plus shipping.

Thanks guys!

Those dimensions should work on quite a few smaller Hondas, likely up to the 350 twin.

How much 'finish' work will it require? Might want to gove folks a better idea so they know what to expect. I have a few GFTP seats and they usually take some Bondo followed by glazing putty here and there to fill in imperfections and then final sanding to prep for paint.

For the anal perfectionist I would say some skimming of filler here and there. There's a couple of spots that are not perfectly flat. The flat seating part has some ripples for sure but that is covered up anyhow. The shape was all hand made so not flawless. Thanks for the feedback!

Also I have a TZ style front fender design that no one seems to be making at this time. I may tweak the design a bit and reproduce those as well. It's pretty cool as it has a tiny little flare on the rear portion.

Probably be a few weeks or so on the tank shaped one....... Even though the shape can be pulled from the tank, it's still a very time consuming process getting to a usable mold. I will update with progress.

I'm very interested in the take shaped seat with the rounded back + the seat pan. Let me know when they are ready.

How much? I would like to get one, I was going to make my own mold.... One of my friends builds hydroponic tables out of fiberglass.. Hence the molds lol get back asap!

The OP hasn't logged into the site for nearly 10 months. Think this ship may have sailed gents. Shame too, I really dig that first seat.
