Cafe seat too wide just behind tank

Greetings. I'm working on my first cafe, a 1980 KZ440 LTD. I ordered a seat from Hotwing and it fits just fine on the cutdown frame rails but is about two inches too wide just behind the gas tank. The as yet unupholstered seat is two inches wider than the stock tank, one inch on each side. Can you point me to solutions to this problem? Thanks for the time.

Shave the sides to conform to the angle of the frame. Or, notch the front so it curves around the back of the tank and scoot the seat forward a bit to close the gap between the 2. Either one.

just did this a few days ago to my hotwing seat i recently ordered. its quite simple. take your measurments and then figure out how much you need to take out width wise in the front. heres a few photos of how i made my seat go from 8.75" to 7" in the front.

tape the front of the seat togeather to make the seams touch and glass the back (underside) back togeather. and thats it.

sand it down, add some filler (i did, but not really needed if you dont want to as it will be under the pad)

thats it. hope that helps.

Nice! Did you cut the two outside sections completely away from the seat? What did you use to cut the fiberglass? Thanks muchly for all your assistance.

no i left the sides attached. i just cut the flat seat surface right to the edge so the sides wouldnt bind when you push them in to meet one another. i used an air saw.

Harbor Freight has cheap vibro cutters that are the cats meow....lol. Great for this kind of stuff.

What is a good rule of thumb for seat placement? I'm thinking this is 3-4" too long. I plan on mids right behind where the center stand sits now.

It's not about how it looks, more about how it fits you. If you're over 6 feet tall, you would feel squashed on my bike.

Sit on the bike with bars and pegs mounted, and make sure you aren't up against the seat hump.
