Calling CB500T owners

My friend is currently rebuilding his cb500t, 1975 model.

He described the handling as 'Hilarious!'.

I've heard a few horror stories about 500T handling, namely a high speed wobble that occurs at 80mph?

Didn't mention anything specifically. Although the 'hilarious' handling could be down to the fact it was fitted with Cheng Sheng death slide tyres. And after about an hour it decided it was just too difficult to keep the engine internals actually 'inside' the cases so decided to eject them over the surrounding area.

You may want to extend the conversation to the cb450k guys. The only suspension difference between them is the 500 has a slightly longer swing arm.

Ah yes but the 450 also has a steeper head stock / rake angle by a degree or 2.
 
My bike wobbled when I got it up to 85. I decided not to go any faster. I am going to adjust the tightness of my steering head bearings if it happens again.

Also, I trusted my bike in a high speed turn until I slid off of a mountain.

Of course I'm not that good of a rider and I was on chinese cheap shit tires (branded Cheng Shin in the states).

If you want a bike that handles good, get a new bike. If it has to be old, get an RD.

Yes, that is the paramedics putting me on a backboard. The bike is about 15 ft ahead of me. Completely trashed. I am almost done rebuilding it. It is a 450 btw.

My god, you are lucky to be alive (did you break anything?) and a 450 is meant to be a better handler than a 500t! :eek:

Did you go too fast into the curve or was it just the cheng shit? Intrigued to know what exactly happened.

Yes, I was extremely lucky. Broken collar bone from when I lowsided and a sprained ankle. My gear saved my life.

It was actually mostly my fault. Too fast for the turn and my ability.

The bike handles pretty well for what it is, but it is no modern sports bike. The main problem I had was that my toes would hit the ground if I had it leaned over too far. I have high scrambler pipes so I had to mount the rearsets about 2 inches out so that the left one was not underneath the muffler.

However, I did experience the high speed wobble a couple times. But as I said, I was going to play with the bearing tightness to try and fix that.

The bike has good low end torque which is helpful on the mountain roads.
