i need a chain breaker for the cam chain on a 1974 honda cb500t. any preferences? rather not spend $50. found a bunch in the $15-20 range on amazon but don't know what I need.

also, anyone know the size i need to get a new master link when I reassemble?

I use this from Harbor Freight:

$16 regularly, I paid $10. You can also use it to rivet master links:

That HF chain breaker is for drive chains, way too big for cam chain
I modified a bicycle one, works OK for one or two chains
Sold my 450/500 chain breaker as I hadn't used it in about 30 yrs
Buy either genuine Honda (if re-using chain) or, whatever comes with replacement chain
The pins are different sizes from different manufacturers

Derp, missed that part about cam chains. Carry on and listen to PJ...

I got the cheap one everybody sells on ebay.

It worked. It would have been fine but it was hard to get it positioned right because of the shape of the head and the width of the tool.

Did you have the outer bolt snugged down onto the chain side-plate?
It would have fitted into head better if fully tightened
It also holds chain steady and guides the push pin.
Chain breaker push pins break pretty easy if not guided properly
