Can't figure this one out on my own

Hey guys. I'm in the home stretch of putting my dads old kz750 back together, but I'm having some issues with the wiring from the push button start/ off-run-off wiring not working right... Here's my situation: if I unplug most of the mess from in the headlight, and connect the 6 wire connector to the start button connection, I get power and a complete circuit when the bike is in the "run" position, but the push start doesn't work. When I connect the rest of the wiring in the headlight housing up (the turns, neutral lights, etc), and connect the 6 pin connector from the push button starter, and turn the ignition on, I blow a fuse immediately. Any idea where I should start checking? I'm thinking its a grounding issue, but I can't find anything. Also, I tried bridging the starter solenoid and the engine cranks... Hopefully you guys have an idea as to where to go from here? Thanks
