carb problem or petcock issue?

I got my 71 CB500F to run on the 3rd kick, but when I shut it down, the carb started spilling gas all over. I know for a fact that the petcock is toasted. It can't stop the gas in any position (new one ordered). Due to the non stop flow of gas, could that cause the carb to fill and run out the over flow tube? I opened the bowls and the float hieght it correct to possibly a little lean, the float needle springs nicely, and the float moves freely. Thoughts?

The gas tank...

The main jet should be preventing the fuel from filling the bowls even if the petcock is on. They may need replaced or their seats may need cleaned, or both. The carbs probably need a really good cleaning and rebuild.

Fuel running out the overflow tubes isn't the bad part... the bad part is that fuel could be running into the cylinder, down past the rings, and diluting/ruining the oil in the crankcase. If it is and you run it like that you can ruin bearings and that would require a whole engine rebuild.

+1

For some reason I thought you said above that gas was escaping somewhere.

Sorry, its been a while. So I opened up the carbs. At the time, it looked like it was all flowing from the over flow tubes. Since then, I replaced the petcock. I also verified/fixed the float height and checked that they all still float. I also checked the over flow tube. I've read that they can crack...didn't find any cracks. Good thing. On the right carb, the main jet seems to have a bad o-ring and just falls out. Apparently the retaining spring has been holding it in, so I just ordered a new one from DCC. The float bowl gaskets seem a little flat, so I am going to order those as well for safe measure. As for a rebuild and cleaning, I did that a couple of years ago and the bike hasn't been driven since. It did have gas sit in it for a little bit some time between now and then, but I only use ethanol free now to help prevent gunking up. So once I get the main jet, I'll toss them back on and see if it still leaks...

...and then I can finally sync my carbs!!!
