Casey Stoner to retire....

Depends on what you read. One forum says Rossi has signed for two more years with Ducati. Another quotes a Honda big wig as saying Honda is going to go after Rossi. Honda as a manufacturer wants to win. They don't really care who rides their bike as long as Honda wins. I can't remember if Rossi' leaving Honda was cordial or not. Honda are well known for a long memory. If he didn't piss them off too bad I'm sure they will come knocking on his door.

I recall Rossi leaving Honda under.....not so good terms.

But then if your champion rider leaves your team and takes his entire crew with him I couldn't see that ever being played out as "cordial" ;D

Time will tell - the silly season is about to get sillier.....

The announcement is certainly a surprise at what is virtually the start of the season!

But a lack of competition for Stoner and boring bikes to ride might have something to do with it.

Bring back the old 500 GP with its prototype bikes!

Strokers rule!

Crazy

Bringing back the strokers would be a step backwards. They were pretty much stretched out in their developement and with today's electronics they would be just as "boring" as today's machines.

Couldn't agree more Hoof. 2 stroke development max'd out by the mid 90's which was the reason for the change to 4 strokes in the first place.

It's funny how people think the new 4 strokes are boring and easy to ride. Try asking Rossi if his Desmosedici is easier to ride than his NSR500 and I'm pretty sure I'd know the answer....

He's still young if he really retires wonder what he would move on to beside the high life ? So from maxing out 2 strokes and going to 4 where to next ?

There are those that believe that GPs should be a prototype event.

People like Jeremy Burgess, Michael Scott, and others long connected with the GP scene believe that reasons other than a development dead-end were behind the axing of two-stroke racing.

With major manufacturers dropping out and racing becoming more processional without the the promised increase in the numbers of top-class bikes entering, MotoGP has been a failure.

Fortunately there is still the IOM for balls-and-all racing!

Crazy

A sad day for motogp when he leaves. He is incredible to watch ride a bike - an amazing talent we all probably wish we had. He's living our dreams or at least mine anyway!
If motogp goes all out CRT it's going to become (yaaaawwwn) like world superbikes.

Doohan style retirement Swivel? Mick was stretchered off the paddock at Jerez in 99 and never came back.

If anything, I'd say Stoner is trying his best to be as far from that scenario as possible.....

Just bustin your balls Swivel.

But I think Mick still works for HRC in some fashion (guess it takes a lot of bills to fuel the helicopters and the Monaco super cruisers....) And he was a guest compare on the local TV for the last round of the GP.

Anyway, if my wife looked like Casey's I'd hang up the leathers and stay home too ;) .

Stoner is one of the all time great riders - just a pity about the charissma byepass. I won't miss his whingeing and sourpuss face when something goes not to plan.

That said - still a great rider. 8)

Think would be fun to see the old style come back ! Where the riders have to run across the track and push start there bikes ! Always love watching that as a kid was just amazing to see . Or really throw a wrench at them and run all the tracks backward or forwards . At the end of the race have the winner pull from a hat which way the track will be for the next race .

The Le Mans start (riders running across the track to their bikes) was (or is) only used for endurance racing. GP racing used to be dead engine, push start. But you can thank the wonderful King Kenny for getting rid of that. Along with 50, 350, and sidecar GP racing. I did once hear that he wanted to get rid of every class and rider except himself as only he was good enough for GP racing. But I'm sure that was only a rumor.

As for the other two suggestions. When I was racing in Ireland there was an end of season meeting in which the first race ran the normal counter clockwise and the second race was clockwise and the third counterclockwise. I'll admit to positively hating running the circuit in reverse. I can only imagine how terrifying it would be with a 200+ HP GP machine.

He’ll pull a Kimi Raikkonen. Race motorcross for a few years, have a stab at NASCAR, then come back and compete. I’m calling it now.

Well, if he can do what Mike Hailwood did, stay away for GP racing for 10 years and come back and win at (of all places) the Isle of Man then I'll change my view. But I have the feeling he will just fade into the Aussie outback and eventually be forgotten.

I was there at the Post TT race at Mallory the year of his Island comeback.

All the nay sayers - "He's finished" "Fluke at the Island", etc., etc. Then he promply lapped everyone up to third [ ? memory fade ] and came in a full minute before the second place rider !

I agree with Hoof - he'll fade into the history books - albeit with plenty of good memories and plenty of money. Can't imagine him being an ambasssador for any major manufacturer - see previous comment about charissma bye-pass.

I was fortunate to be in the Island for both years of his "comeback". Basically it was like he never left. Can't remember which year it was now but I got up early!!! for the morning practice and wandered over to Bradden to have a look. You could sit in the church yard on the exit and get a great view. I brought my camera along but had it sitting on the ground when Hailwood went through. 20 minutes later he didn't show up. I heard someone say he was changing to his 250. Sure enough he came through on the 250 and dumped it. Slid right up to my feet and bounced off the church wall. I grabbed my camera only to discover I had only one shot left in it!! This is what I shot. I got to shout to him "You OK Mike?" (like I knew him for years LOL!!) He said he was fine. And despite scouring imageshack I can't find the damn photo.

Still killed them all when it came to the race!!! Stoner is obviously great but he is great only if you d on't bring up Hailwood's name.
