cb 350 twin Mechanical spark advancer

I have been having troubles with my CB high revving by itself and it has been suggested that I look at my Spark advancer to check old grease that may be causing it to stick. My question concerns the points, can they be removed to gain access to the advancer without disrupting their setting or will I have to reset the gap upon reassembly, and btw what am I looking for when looking into my spark advancer?
 
You will need to re-set points and ignition timing.
The clearance around points plate makes it just about impossible to get them back in exact same position.
