CB 360 codename "Strike-out"

Hey guys, new to the forum, new to motorcycles, so i'm going to start my build with a little info about me.

I just turned 19, my name is Randall, and i'm a recent art school drop-out.

i recently sold my POS project car, a 240sx coupe, and ended up buying a CB360 among other things.

it started out as stock, non running cb360, that i picked up for 250 bucks this weekend.

first thing i did to it was get it running, (ignition switch had a torn wire, soldered it back up the day i got the bike, and it fired right up)

so now that i had a running motorcycle, a freshly printed permit, i decided to do what most people would do.

tear it apart.

so the second day i owned the bike, i stripped it down. didnt have my camera, but yall know what it looks like taking apart a bike.

so i got it to look like this, after three hours of removal/ chopping the tail

and all the parts got put in a bin for safe keeping.

End of build day 1.

Day 2

only had a few hours, so i ground some tabs off the rear section of the frame, and started building the seat.

went to hardware store, bought a big sheet of pink foam, and cut it up.

then glued pieces together using 3M spray adhesive, like such

and started filing away,

first on bike test, to see where i was at

DSC_0039.jpg

and more filing....

til it started to take some shape.

dont mind the aluminum foil over the carbs, didnt want foam in em.

DSC_0041.jpg

until i got almost where i wanted it, but my day got cut short after only working for about 2 hours

so here's how it sits now,

tomorrow, im going to finish the foam, glass it, and finish the tab removal on the frame.

ordering clip ons within the next day or so, along with new twist grip and tail light, planning on making a headlight bucket/speedo gauge holder out of fibreglass, making front fender out of glass, still have to remove a dent from the tank,

either buy or make some velocity stacks, make a batteryless wiring harness, and figure out what the now/later plans are for clutch/brake controls.

rearsets will be made sometime this week, out of aluminum sheet, threaded rod for linkage, and thin alloy bmx pegs.

tell me what yall think?

so far, i have around 350 bucks total spent, including a brand new battery im not going to use, and all of the glassing supplies and foam.

I'd be very careful with that styrofoam, resins can eat through it, so I'd test it on a spare piece first. I made that mistake with some aramid/CF components I was making for our school's SMV car, ended up covering the thing in bondo, then paint, then resin, then wax then mold release to make a male mold.

With that out of the way:

WELCOME!

Beautiful seat by the way.

It looks like you're on your way to a good looking bike, and remember that running pods or stacks will probably require a jet kit.

I look forward to seeing this come along!

thanks a bunch for the seat comment!

its my first motorcycle, and obviously my first motorcycle build, and i've never made anything out of foam before,

so this is all new to me,

for sure, about the resin tip, its getting a spray mounted layer of aluminum foil over the foam before it gets its glass treatment.

i guess i didn't know about requireing a jet kit for stacks...

im new to carbs, mainly have worked on fuel injected cars since i was a wee lad.

Welcome!
And a great start, I used the same foam, seat looking good.
Keep the pics coming.

Most bikes are set pretty lean from the factory, and decreasing the amount of resistance needed to draw in air means the air is coming in at a higher density per given RPM. I'm no carb expert either, but the general consensus I've picked up is that going up one clip on the jet needle while going up a main jet size or two with the addition of a new exhaust/intake will keep things nice and happy.

Thanks a bunch!

I just read your thread last night, cafe pete, after i had already made my seat, and was like, wow, he used the same foam!

Looks very cool man. That seat has a really neat shape to it. Just be careful you dont go too big on the cowl. Once its all finished, upholstered and painted, seats sometimes look a hair bigger than the did in raw form IMO. The 360 isnt a big bike ya know? Anyhow, Brainrush is pretty much dead on about the carbs. It takes a little experementing usually, but youll figure it out Im sure. WELCOME TO DTT!

Talk about some massive potential! Loved the pics of the seat build. Can't wait to see this progress!

she's stealing the words right out of my mouth! ;)

Small update, guys and gals

day got cut short, only had about an hour to work,

finished sanding the seat,

DSC_0001.jpg

spray mounted foil

DSC_0002_2.jpg

and layed down exterior layer of glass
DSC_0003_2.jpg

also, got paid for my 240sx engine, so i ordered some parts,

got clip ons and a new twist grip and headlight brackets in the mail.

within the week, hope to have the seat finished, a headlight bucket made, a front fender made, and next week i can get started putting it all back together.

thats the plan anyways....

looking good!

BTW, since you said you were new to motorcycling, have you thought of taking an MSF course? I would recommend it.

That's a pretty unique shape, I like it. Any plans to modify the frame to match?

i have some plans, some short term, some long term,

short term, extend the tail section out, following the bottom line of the seat cowl,
with the cowl bolted to a piece of sheetmetal

the suspension will remain as is for now, as i'm doing this on a budget, to get it to point A, then save up money, slowly getting to where i really want it to be.

i would love to do an extended swingarm, relocated spring position, a heightened tail angle/taller rear susp.

thanks a bunch everyone for the seat comments, and yes, a MSF course is in the works, first one is beginning of May.
i have only ridden on a few rural back roads, and am waiting til the msf course to drive populated areas.

Multiple layers of fiberglass have been layed down on the inside of cowl/seat area, and is hardening, pics to follow.

also, ordered a clutch lever and perch, as well as finding a great deal on a 03 gsxr front master cylinder/perch/lever, all lines, and both front calipers w/pads for 100 shipped,

so after making rearsets, the controls of the bike are all accounted for, so body work and electrical is all that it will need to be back on the road again.

another small update,

only did a couple of layers of fiberglass, have to lay down a couple more tomorrow for it to be structural,

i might trim off the front a little bit, to bring the tail section forward a little more.

i also bought everything i need to make rearsets, will probably be making those tomorrow or this weekend, also bought some 1 inch tubing

made a jig out of wood, bent pipes, welded them on, ground them down,

and layed a bit of paint down,

so now the frame looks like this

2010-04-14225057.jpg

more work to do this weekend, grind a few more tabs off, (my angle grinder took a shit on me.)

Got all the supplies to make rear sets, should be in business after the weekend. I have all day everyday to work on the bike next weekend so progress will be made.

Ended up saying to hell with it, I already have most everything off, might as well pull the engine, forks, and swing arm, so I can clean the engine/paint, as well as new oil seals in the forks, and paint the frame,
So I stripped it all down, more projects to work on next week.
