cb 360 motor assembly help

Been Around the Block
I'm re-assembling my cb 360. I just have a quick question after running into something last night. Is it possible to use a piston ring compressor such as this one when puttin' this thing back together or do I need to find one to go under the jugs when they go on (one that can come off of the piston)? and where can I get one of those?

Compressor I have VVV

You don't need it. The bottoms of the cylinder sleeves are tapered. Just oil up the cylinders and rings, rotate the crank until the pistons are even, then gently slide the cylinders over the pistons. The tapers will automatically compress the rings until they are seated. Key is gently with lots of lube, hmmm when have I heard that before? :D

Wait a sec, you have a 360. I thought I read 350. Hopefully the 360 cylinder sleeves are tapered.

HAHAHAHA! Sounded familier to me too.

I've gotten my 360 cylinders on the pistons several times without needing a ring compressor. Just compress them yourself with your fingers.

it took a little encouraging but I got 'em on no problem. Thanks Guys! I woulda wasted a lot of time messin' around with some tool I had to go out and buy if it wasn't for ya'll

Ya'll finger nails ain't long enough...use a small poker(screw driver)....and has em at mid point in the stroke(both pistons at the same elevation) slip down the cylinder block,,,,,

Thanks guys! Everything is squared away... Almost. I have everything buttoned up except, I cannot get the gear that joins the crank shaft near the oil filter unit and the oil pump. Maybe called the idle gear..?..

This picture is not mine just an example.
Both manuals I have say you can just pop it on and off, easy as can be. You Can't... at least I can't. I don't have the special socket tool to remove the filter. Do I just have to suck it up and buy the socket or is there away around it without tearing everything down again.

Thanks!

all you need to remove the filter is the proper metric bolt, thread it into the hole there and tighten, when it bottoms out, keep turning until the filter comes off, if it starts turning the crank, tap your wrench with another wrench and it will come off. I thought I needed the tool too, but honda is so cool about making stuff so you can fix it without buying special tools

I think I should have used this picture...

Again this is not my bike, but I have the filter cap off and its that lock nut inside the filter that needs to be taken out before the filter itself can be removed from the crank.

thanks

I can't remember what it looks like, but what's so special about the tool? I mean, it kinda looks like just a big allen head bolt in there.....

Well I believe that piece you are looking at is part of the crank shaft.. I'm not sure. But the lock nut that needs to be removed before the filter can be taken off is similar to your standard socket but its got 4 prongs. This is what I need. http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/partno/08-0015/# I'm just wondering if there is another way around it. cuz the manual says it just slides in there with no mention of removing the filter. I'm gonna order the part now, cuz I don't see anyway around it.

you should be able to pull the shaft and gear out in one piece.
There is a pin sticking out 90 deg on end which has to be located in crankcase
Gear drives oil-pump and hollow shaft delivers oil to clutch cover/filter
for the 'star' nut, you could cut up an old socket or make one from thick wall pipe, don't have at it with a blunt screwdriver, if you damage filter housing your ******

I cut up an old socket...it was pretty square too, but it didn't work so well...I just bought the part so I don't mess anything up...It'll be easier and I don't need to do anything but put the cover and oils screen on, then it'll be wrapped up...plenty to do while waiting.

Thanks
