CB 450 DOHC wheel swap

danno

Been Around the Block
I have a very nice set of black Comstar rims that I would like to swap for the spoked rims on my ' 73 K6,to gain the advantage of being able to run tubeless tires. I realize I will have to either alter the swingarm or make bushings for the rear axel,as the Comstars use a smaller diameter rear axel. My question is regarding wheel size...the stock rims are 19" front and 18" rear, whereas the Comstars are 18" front and 16" rear. How drastic a change might this create to the handling characteristics of this bike? The 16" rear tire has a taller profile than the 18" rear,so overall diameter will not be much different. I am curious about what difference a front tire that is an inch smaller in diameter is going to cause. If I am not mistaken, some of the earlier CB 450 DOHCs were equipped with an 18" front rim. Can anyone help me out with this? As always, any insight is most appreciated!

That's a LOT of work just to avoid tubes. I'm also not sure how 16" rear would work out for you. I know old chopper guys used to put 16" rims on CB hubs (rear) so that the ass would drag...

You'll also need to consider brake setup, wheel offset and bearing differences (just off the top of my head).

Anything can be done though...it's jut metal.

cheers.
