CB 750 triple tree material

Wasn't sure where to ask this, so I recon here is as good as any...
Any of you metal people know what the lower tree on the cb750 is? It sure looks like cast, but can't be as it is welded to the stem. I need to weld a plate to it but not sure what rod to use.

They are not really welded in. The stems are mechanically pressed into the lowers. And yeah, its basically cast.

Looking at the bottom there is indeed a weld around the stem. The fork lock is also welded in.
