CB/CL350 Exhaust

Sand bends would be cool--very vintage. Personally, I like the tigher bends with the exposed welds. Hydroforming would be cool. I'd be curious what the set-up cost for something like that is. Oh, I need to remember to send you a link for cone template software. I just found it this morning. If I had it a couple weeks ago, I could have save $140 for the burns reverse cone I bought. I think I told you I can get cones rolled for $10, but I have to cut it out.

OK, updates...

This morning I used a posterboard template as a jig for my merge collector. Shockingly, it worked perfectly. Here are the cut pieces.

The I lined them up perfectly and gave them four tacks on the outside and two on the inside. Welding with a .040" electrode gives me pin-point accuracy. I love it!

Here it is pretty wel welded up. Since the picture was taken, I went back and filled in the difficult part..which was extremely difficult. I don't have a pic of that part yet but you'll see it this afternoon. Luckily, it is tucked way under the bike.

Oh, and I had a fire inside my merge collector! seems the backpurge tube caught fire--sorta, it smoked because the argon put the flames out. Anyway, I'm sure there is a nice mess in there to clean up. Since that happened, I shoved a piece of 5051 tube inside the plastic tube. That should help.

I finally got some time to finish off the exhaust. I made a mistake and had to chop off the lower bends. Pisses me off because those bends cost quite a bit. It was nice though because I was able to have a look at my welds. I needed to turn the heat up a bit and move the puddle faster. Anyway, these are the final pics...

I love this pic. I worked with Burns Stainless to design the reverse cone megaphone. It looks huge to me, but they swear it will work. Let's hope so.

And for shits and grins, I threw an aluminum seat on the bike. I took the old seat off so I could charge the batteries, but they died from disuse. I must get out of the garage and start riding these things more.

humm after attaching and removing the exhaust a few times would the seals at the spring connection no become loose and cause possible blow bye.

Although it's hard to tell from the pictures, how close does the brake lever come to the cone?

I really like that cone, does burns have it listed on there website?

but im scared of a leak from the spring connector...


any chance you can make whole 1 piece pipes?

No, that is a very tight connection with 16ga stainless. I had to pound them them into place with a rubber mallet. Once the pipes get hot, they will expand further making the joint tighter. Plus, slip joints with beehive springs is done all the time on vintage racers and racecars.

It looks close, but there is plenty of clearence. http://www.burnsstainless.com/Megaphones/megaphones.html Don't let those prices fool you though. The reverse cone cost more than the megaphone.

See the response above. I have little worries about this. I'm actually surprise you guys have not see this done before. The pipes cannot be make in 1 piece due to the splayed exhaust port angle at the head. It just doesn't work. Mac or someone may do it, but I have a much more elegant solution.

No, it's because the primaries taper inward. I've made a 2-1 single piece exhaust before and I had to man-handle it into place. Then, when the pipes got hot, the expanded and pulled an exhaust studd out. This system won't do that. It also has the benefit of removal for oil changes, which is nice.

No video yet. i thought i could ride it this weekedn, but my little batteries were ruined from disuse. I must ride more and work in the garage less :)

It is just a matter of heat and wire speed, and knowing how they affect each other. I do not have any doughts at all in a mig on thin guage metal if you take the time to learn how to run it. I run 440 volt stick machine 8 hours a day it all translates if it is a 3 inch thick hunk of steel or a 16th or thinner just control where you have your heat. Do your homework on the tool not a computer

hmph... well Im going to take the welding classes this summer anyways, then down the line Ill look into an inexpensive mig setup and see what I can do with it. I guess the guy on the fabrication forums were just welding snobs :p

Holy SHIT!!

I finally got around to firing this bike up with the new exhaust, and it is unbelievable!!! The sound is ...ok...sounds like a normal 2-1 CB350 with open pipes. Actually, it crackles and pops a lot less. But...

This thing has UNBELIEVABLE POWER! There is torque everywhere and the power just climbs and climbs. Previously, the bike was about 20% LESS powerful than the CB360 I built. Fuck that. Now, it is about 30% MORE POWERFUL. Jesus that was worth all the work.

Obviously, well excited. Probably the most excited I've ever gotten on this forum.
