CB175 rear sets

FooFoo

Now with improved crunchy action!
Since y'all are real Honda intensive, some body here may be able to show/tell/direct us.

My friend just got a 71 CB175 and wants rear sets on it.

Can anybody here help?

There are some good examples around the site that I have seen. Price wise if you have the proper tools at your disposal then making them is definitely the best way to go. Really sucks that Woodcraft or some other company doesn't make an affordable set for these older bikes. My 175 is getting there and once i sort out this problem with the coil I will be ready to do the rearsets and call it good I think, if i figure anything out special or take some good pictures of the whole process I will make sure to post them. On the other hand I will probably get lazy at some point and stop taking pictures! :)

Tricky part about rearsets on the 175 is the passenger peg location. That's where most people like to place the footpeg. But the exhaust is mounted quite close to this area leaving very little room for shift and brake levers. Either a lower slung exhaust or a higher/more outboard footpeg location is required.

Example from Ohio Cafe Racers:

Thanks, that is some good advice! I honestly hadn't even noticed that. I have been trying to get the carbs adjusted right and haven't put any focus to it yet. I got some wiring to finish up with and then I think I can start with rear-sets. I finally did get the carbs sorted out and tuned pretty good today and the bike is running great so i think maybe I can get started on planning some rear-sets this weekend. The pipes on the bike are pretty small and out of the way but looking at this picture, sorry for phone quality, I may have to rethink my initial brain storming.

With a little modification to the passenger peg mount, FZR600 rearsets are a bolt-on operation. This is on a CL175, though I'm reasonably certain that the peg hangers are the same between the CB/CL's.

Kind of a weak pic, but hopefully you get the idea. I can snap more if'n ya need.

I would love to see some more if you don't mind. That would save me some time in borrowing a welder if I can make those work. I would probably trust the work a whole lot more too :) My welding skills haven't been used in quite some time now and this isn't the kind of thing i wanna chance it on!

Thanks
Tom

I have the same thing for my CB175. Haven't put them on yet, but they should work and were pretty cheap. I had EX500 rearsets on and they work great... untill I put the exhaust back on. With CL pipes they would have been great

How did you handle the return spring for the brake side?

That bit required firing up the wire-feed.

First thing I did was mount up a new stay on the frame. Used a SS clevis pin, drilled through the frame & welded it up. The spring that you see in this pic is one of many I went through before finding one that would work. This one was a no-go.

The other snafu I found was that the spring hanger on the FZR brake pedal was too flimsy. I think the problem is that it was never designed for a lateral pull from a fixed point; on the FZR it pulls vertically from a hydraulic cylinder. So I made a new bracket out of a little thicker steel and welded that to the brake arm.

Here's how it all fits together. The other benefit to fabbing up a new spring hanger on the brake pedal was that I could dial in it's location to suit whatever spring I wanted; I ended up using the spring off the donor FZR.

That's awesome man, thanks for the help! I can't weld... but I could probably drill a small hole in the frame, threadit with a tap set, and mount a small bolt to hold the spring.

I notice you have a radial tire in the back.. Which tire/size did you go for? I am having a hard time finding a rear tire in the 3.00-18 size. Is it 100/90-18? Does it rub at all?

No problem.

Honda used pretty thin-wall tubing on these frames, I doubt you'd have much, if any success with tapping it for a bolt; I would be hesitant to trust anything that wasn't welded into the frame... If you did all the prep work beforehand, I can't imagine a shop would charge you much to just zap the pin in place. Might even get by with just a half-rack if you're lucky.

The rear tire is a 110/90-18; It's a little bigger than I wanted to go but the pickings are indeed slim when it comes to a modern tire to replace that 3.00x18 size. I haven't gotten the thing on the road yet so I'm not sure how it's gonna handle. I don't think it'll rub, but it may be close.

whats up guys,

my cd 175, i used rear sets of a gxsr 750 and a r6. they work great, DrJ is right though when he said that there
is not alot of room for them. i had to lower my exh, but i am 6 foot and the rear pass peg fit awesome.
i do have the other brakets, and had them on but found them to be to far up for me.

i payed 160 for mine from neol, and they fit, function properly.
but i got a good deal for them, came with every thing to install and go, so ask around and see what is out there on the
forum. some one might have what you need..
any way, these 175 are great and really fun, and with the rear sets on it make it way better.
this is my 2 cents.

Cool, glad to see how much love there is for these 175s. I am still waiting on title stuff for mine, hopefully i will be riding soon!

I ended up order FZR600 rearsets and just as said they do line up with the bolt spacing perfectly, had to modify the mounts for the swingarm bolt to the frame, but had an extra set around anyway. So far they feel great and work correctly. I took some pictures of the deal and once it is finished up I will post them. Riding around the block though I am happy with them and they seem like a really straight forward way of getting it done.

hey man,
right on. so they work fine, i had to wait for my owner ship aswell when i first got mine. it was sold with out one, but the
guy who sold it got it for me any way. he had to go through alot of trouble to get it. any way there alot of fun.
what tires are you going to run??????
i went for wide bridgstones on the rear, and the bike came with a cheap new duro original size. but with the wider tire,
it grabs the road good in the corners. and the best thing is, the tire only cost me, with a new tube, installed for 60 bucks...
i was told that you can run a none tubed tire, just have to run a differant type of tube...
any way, you will have fun with this bike, not the fastest but one of the most fun i've rid.
well good luck.

Yeah they actually bolted up really easy, had to modify those mounts a bit but nothing too drastic really. Hopefully the title will be back in a couple of weeks, i am itching to ride some and i got a ways to go on the 350 too, it has a title but still mid rebuild on engine for it.

For tires, I actually got the 175 almost done, someone had spend a lot of time on it and they had put brand new tires on it they are Kenda Challengers. Here is a link http://www.kgmotorcycletires.com/kenda_k657_challenger.htm I can't tell you anything about how well they ride since i haven't gotten to spend much time but around the neighborhood on them but I can vouch that the price is right compared to modern sportbike tires :)

I am just hoping for a good stable bike to have some fun on, i been there done that on the super fast stuff and I have gotten lucky way to many times to keep pushing my luck too much. Hopefully 175cc of fury will help to keep me under control and let me still have a good time. Not that it is any safer but at least it won't do 110 before you notice it!

What size bridgestones did you end up going with?

hey man,
ya, the fury of the 175 will keep you at bay. but it will still give you a speeding ticket!!
i live in brockville ont, and we have a road called the parkway, right by the water. the road was just paved and
i hit a straight stretch and there was no wind and no cars. so i decided to see the top end of my bike. i was already
at 60 mph, and by the end of the straight i pined the speedo, i think it is out by 2-5 mph but 100 mph was fast on the
little guy. still not a crotch rocket, took alittle to get there but it did.

the tires size i have on the rear is 110/90/17, to big for the fender, so i built a inner and a bobbed one with the spade
in it. works real well, and on the front just because it was all new it is the stock size. will be getting a front to match the
rear soon though. so you have a 350 to, that is my next bike. i want to make a bratt bike out of one.
anyway, post up some pics of that bike, see how the rear sets work.
later.
