I was wondering is it possible to pull off those ugly shrouds at the top of these shocks? Seems like it is, but I'm not sure how. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Dammit! How do you get a pic to load? Do you have to use Photobucket or something to get code?! I fell like I've done it before without having to do that. All I have is a link for now, sorry: http://thebullitt.blogspot.com/p/the-bullitt-cb.html
I know which ones you're talking about. I'm looking to do the same. When you figure it out, would you mind coming back here and mentioning how you did it? The only other option i see is buying some new ones without that shroud.
The way I took them off my 450 may not be the safest way BUT - I put the preload adjusters in their lighest position, held the bottom of the shock against a piece of 2X4 on my chest and pulled on the shroud to compress the spring. It doesn't take too much compression to get the retainers out.
please do the right thing and make a spring compressor. doing it by hand sounds like a stupid way to lose an eye. Also, once you make the compressor you'll have it for years to come.
Compressor is the right way to go and safest, but on a cb it should be possible to do it by hand. Make sure that the lower end can't move and you should be OK. Watch out for flying springs and if you get part of your hand caught between the spring and top retainers, we'll be able to hear you scream from here.....
