Cb350 stuck in first

Been Around the Block
My CL350 engine on my CB350 is stuck in first gear. I can't pull the shifter up at all. I can push it down though.
How can I get it out of gear?

I took the bike out for a test ride to see how it felt after I adjusted the timing and carbs and it was shifting a little weird. It seemed like the shift lever was just loose, so I checked that, and it was a little loose. Then I adjusted the clutch and when I shifted it into first to check the clutch it wouldn't come back up to neutral or second or anything.

Yeah, the clutch is working the bar that sticks out that the shift lever goes on just won't move up at all

Is the bike in motion? Sometimes you have to rotate the rear wheel a bit for it to shift.

Yeah I have tried that. I'm pretty sure my neighbor thought I looked like an idiot just moving the bike back and forth trying to shift it.

He was probably right, hard to come out of that one looking good. :)

Hopefully your clutch is still out of adjustment - my suggestion would be to make sure that the mechanism behind the sidecover us in the right position and check adjustment again. Better to eliminate that before looking at bigger problems.

I'll be sure to check the clutch again when I get a chance tomorrow. It seemed to be working fine, but hopefully something is wrong with that not the transmission.

No mean to thread highjack, but what mechanism or part of the gearbox causes this? I usually had to rock it back and forth too to find neutral (when engine off). Similarly if running, only able to get to neutral if moving. Usually holding in the clutch at stop lights.

I might be wrong, but i always just thought that it was like this because of the position that the gears are in. In other words, you have to move the bike to loosen one gear from another. That made sense in my head at least...

Yea I thought the same thing and just went with it. Had never seen another 350 in person, or even sat in a different bike ever at the time. Helped a craigslist guy a few months back get his 350 running, and noticed his shifted a whole lot better than mine.

Could also be you're missing the c-clip that holds the selector shaft in the right position. Not 100% sure for the 350, but most hondas have a clip selector shaft which keeps it lined up. If this is missing, the shaft will slide out, preventing you from shifting gears. Solution is to either replace the c-clip, or, you can shim out the selector shaft by taking off the selector itself, pulling on the selector shaft (To get it lined up, generally it should be "out" as far as it can go), throwing a few washers on it, and then putting the selector back on. You might need to take the casing off anyway, depending on how tight the selector fits on the shaft to make sure its aligned properly. You also probably want to find that c-clip.

This can happen if you bang on the selector shaft for any reason (most of the time, either removing or replacing the selector with a mallet, but it can happen if you drop the bike), putting sideways pressure on the c-clip. It just pops right out of the groove and then falls off the shaft into the bottom of the casing.

You can test it without taking the bike apart, just pull on the selector. Does the shaft have more than a few mm of sideways play? Then the c-clip is missing.

I just looked at my bike again and it doesn't look like there is too much play in the selector shaft. It looks pretty normal and I have adjusted my clutch again and it is working fine. Still can't move it up though. I made a video of the movement in the selector shaft and of what is goin on when I try to shift.

The in and out is the same on my 350s. I think you're into pulling the right cover off and seeing what's up in there. Hopefully you have a manual handy?

Alrighty. I'll start pulling it apart tomorrow. I am staying at families house for the summer, so I was trying to avoids doing too much work like that while I am here. I do have a couple different manuals on my computer. Hopefully I can ride soon!

So, I'm trying to get the right side off my engine, but the kick start lever is stuck on. Any ideas on how to get it off?
