CB350 Top End Rebuild Questions

Here are some pics of the engine. She was not treated well during her lifetime. I know that she is leaking from the tappet covers, can you tell if she is leaking from anywhere else?

Finally have all the parts back on ( minus the tank ). Tried starting her up and the right carb is popping, doing research now hoping to find the cause.

"As far as the engine goes, I just got a quote for honing @ $20 a cylinder.
Then I asked how much he would charge to replace the gaskets on the top end...... $400!

Does that sound like too much? I was thinking $300 tops. But, then again, I'm a total n00b at this." $400 wow really. that mean i saved $1000 when i tore apart my cb360 engine to replaced the drive shaft. This is from a guy who never work on bike before. I got a manual, bought parts from Ebay and just went at it. at first it seems hard, just take your time. now i can tear on down and put it back together blind folded..hahahahaha seriouly, you can do it.

If the motor is in the frame, it needs to be removed then disassembled. Cam needs to come out which means the sprocket has to come off the cam. Once all the top end components are broken down, all the old gasket material has to be scraped off which could take up to 2 hours for a careful, thorough job. Once the new gaskets are placed, all the parts need to be reassembled correctly. Camchain must be lined up perfectly, cam cover nuts properly torqued, valves adjusted to proper clearances. And engine reinstalled in frame. Sounds like a fair price to me.

I am just doing this myself for the first time on a spare CB350 motor I just picked up. The top end had been torn down, but the cylinders/pistons look good. I am planning on replacing the rings and cam chain, then button her back up. I am going to follow this thread closely during the rebuild.

Good luck!

Dr J, Thanks for the feedback. I asked the person to explain his quote but he did not give me half of that info. The Engine will be loose because I plan I powder-coating the frame. I bought the bike to learn how to work with my hands, always wanted to rebuild something. This is my chance, I will be doing the work myself.

Few questions:

- to replace the cam chain and tensioner, do I need to dissemble the bottom end?

- I have NOS rings, pistons, and pins. Can I replace these without too much adjustment? IE rods?

- My motor is a Type 1 from a K0 CL350, anyone have experience with gasket kits not fitting correctly?
I noticed that most gasket kits cover motors from 60 and up. Also, what brand do you recommend?

- Anyone in the LA/OC area offer hands on guidance? Will pay for time, let's talk?

Thanks!!!

1.) Nope. Leave the bottom end alone unless there's something wrong. I made that mistake and it's not a good one.

2.) Not a tough task. Just make sure everything measures out to spec when you're finished. There's a knack to installing the rings correctly. Make sure you read through the manual or ask again here when you're ready to do that part. Breaking a ring sucks, big time.

3.) No recommendations from me.

4.) I'm in Oregon, sorry. If it helps, (which I'm sure it doesn't) I was raised in Valencia. :D
