CB350 Triple 6

IMOALE

Onw Mean Chihuahua
Here are some shots of Triple 6. I just lost an hours work on here so Im uploading pics and modify as I go. So check out the whole blog from the start if you come back for a visit since I'll be adding pics and trying to keep some sort of continuity going.

Triple 6 has been going for about a year now. But a family budget leaves little to play with so it been slow. Even the extra cash from working on a Rhino on the side didnt see Triple 6. Triple 6 was going to be a parts bike for another cb350 bobber project that I have but Triple six was too complete to turn into a parts bike. So one project became two. Triple six was just missinga few details or so says the mechanic who I bought it from. Triple six had been broken down for paint and never completely put back together. Its last incarnation was a yellow frame wih a yellow and black tank. Wish I had take pictures. But heres a shot of the tank on my bobber project you can imagine the rest. I like the tank for the bobber so its staying on that ride.

As you can see T6 sports a cb750 tank right now and hopefully it still agrees with me once the engine is back in. The width is whats bugging me, we'll have to wait so no work on that tank yet. the frame was sandblasted and powder coated all fo the sum of 60 bucks its all who you know (IN MEXICO). I took a deep breath and took he grinder to the battery box tabs.

DVC00243.jpg

I bought the 49 dollar clip ons on ebay and I'm satisfied with the purchase. Tomaselli is not the budget for now. And I want to stay away from billet. I'm going for a BCR look with a little more vintage to it.

This is where my seat will come to. I didn't know where my tree stump would come from and we had a wind storm. A tree fell and I get a free stump. The rest is Harbor Frieght. I've had to fix the hammer more than twice, but can beat the price.

DVC00255.jpg

This is my first try at the rear cowl, th shape is fine, but too small we'll have to keep trying.

DVC00256.jpg

DVC00264.jpg

I've been working on the seat this last week since it was the only thing I could work into my budget. A parts bike is on it's way I hope if I can get a grasp on 200 bucks and not let go. The seat is all steal which I know is not as light as fiberglass or aluminuim, but its the way I felt like going with this.

DVC00265.jpg

As you can see it's a work in progress, but I really like the way it is coming.

DVC00267.jpg

With some practice maybe a seat or two will help me fund my project (wishfull thinking)

Here is where I am at my controls. I love these old swithes they are so easy to rebuild. You couldn't do this with a new control switches.

DVC00251.jpg

This is the switch after a carefully taking it apart cleaning all the contact points on my wire wheel and putting all the little parts in a zip lock bag.

DVC00253.jpg

This is after putting the piece thru the wire wheel and removeing the silver coating that it had. I thought about polishing these but I alreaday have chrome on the clip ons so ....

Along comes some glossy powder coat.

Okay no pics today but I picked up my third cb350 today. Tried to talk the man down to $200 but had to hand over $250, which is still better than $300. Sprayed the hell out of it with insecticide about three black widows came out. Its a 72 which seems to be complete except for the points and points cover and battery box. Both of which I have. I'm gonna get it running before I attempt to scavange it for parts for Triple 6. I have decided Triple 6 will have to be my long term goal since its gonna take the most $$$ to get the results I want. Pics tomorrow if no overtime.

Here it is my new ;D 72 cb350. I wish she was a barn find, but there not that many barns around here. More like desert find which is good since it inhibits RUST. The tank has a light rust to it i rubbed my finger and i can see clean metal rigt away.

And here's a question. What do you think should I make this a parts bike or should I get this running with minimal cafe mods so I can start riding the weather is nice right now, OR should I take parts from it even though Triple 6 will not be complete if I do so. I also contemplated gettting swappig all of the parts bike into Triple 6.

Nice! It's good to see a real builder on here. Are you going to take the seat to the English wheel or do you have a different idea to smooth out the lumps?

Thanx, means alot from u. Mysta2 pointed me in ur direction awhile back while I was trying to score some headlight mounts from him. You do real good work. And no I won't ask the girls names LOL. Im gonna use an air planishing hammer, but might be a little of both. Your seats look awsome hopefully I can get close to that quality.

Okay hit a wall today :( I need a battery. I will probably head to Waly world and buy a stock battery. I'll need it for the bobber down the road anyway and it will be cheap and fast to get. I stripped the 72 bike down and checked the wiring, installed the points, key switch, but I need the battery to turn this puppy over. I'v found a broken motor mount on it so this is leaning towards parts bike. planning on using the front end on Triple 6 since it has a nice disk brake.

Big goof by trying to save time/money I pulled out the battery from my car in an atempt to start it up. Dropped the battery $80 bucks flew out of my wallet. I should have just called up Isac for his battery/starter charger. :'(

AHHHHG okay update the starter is seized on the new bike so Parts it is. Back on track with Triple 6. Engine rebuild has become priority. I will be going to a machine shop on Monday to have a new tensioner cut for Tripple six. Then I'll crack open the bottom end (It's only screwed together right now) and starting final rebuild on the engine. Until then I will start routing a new wire harness. will be using some plans I bought on auction instead of using the stock harness.

Left side controls got on today. Scavanged some very necesary parts form the new bike and got the left side control and grip on. Did some buffing and some wire wheel work on the parts. Not to shaby if I may say so..... ;D

Baby steps baby steps. The parts bike gets me closer and closer. I went ahead and completed the left cluch plate cover. It had been sitting around waiting for a bearing retainer. I cleaned it out completely pushed new grease thru to get all that old grease out, cleaned up all the parts, and repacked. I taped over the parts to avoid loosing the bearing.

DVC00483.jpg

DVC00484.jpg

Also removed the clutch cable and some WD40 thru it to clean it out and regreased it. Then I used my fave some shrink wrap to cover up the old faded grey. You can see it on the pics above.

One more good thing came from the parts bike. I got to fit the tank on to see how it would look with the engine in. And I liked the result. So a flush and paint job will be in the works soon. I also found out its a cb550 tank and not a 750 as I first thought.

DVC00477.jpg

Hopefully this baby will get both my projects done. I'll wait until then to auction off the remains. I will be making a nice cafe seat(Giuliari style but with a soft bump stop to acomade a pax) from the seat. I will see if I can start a thread on that. I intend to auction it off for some much needed funds.

Planning a trip to Harbor Frieght tomorrow to get some supplies I need. It's slow progress with the kids soccer and work, but It's comming along well. I drilled the hole for the wires in the right clip on yesterday. I hope to set a stand for the parts bike tomorrow. I'll be using alot of ideas from cafe's in here. Planning on some custom rear sets set further forward than the usual set up for cb350s.

Okay day today. Looking forward to this long week end. Tomorrow I'll clean up shop and start the engine rebuild early in the day. I have mounted the controls and throttle on the clip ons. finished wrapping the throttle, clutch, and tach cables. One glitch I can't find my right hand lever and need the speedo cable. I found a lever but it's thinnner so a trip to the bone yard might be in the works. Also pulled out the planishing hammer and set it up. Hooked it up to my small air compressor with bad results I can only do short bursts, and also had my compressor heat up and stop. ::) It started up again after it cooled an hour later :) I'll shoot some pics of progress tommorow after I clean up shop. Looking for ideas on mounting the cb350 petcock to the cb550 tank.

Sure bro, they are powder coated. I took all the parts to get sand blasted. I talked to the owner of a shop near me that makes metal furniture and he was real cool telling me bring all the parts you want and I'll shoot em for a$50 bucks. (Should have taken more parts) Only thing is he sprayed them inside also. I'm leaving a little bit of gasoline on the inside of one to see if it peals. Its baked on real good and the parts were super clean so I hope it sticks. If it does peel I'll have insides sandblasted. I actually rebuilt my old controls. They were powder coated along with the rest of the parts. I scavanged up all the parts from junkyards tophalf here button there an so on. I need a right hand lever (have to lefts) Im trying the rattle can on some small parts under the seat myself, but I couldnt find the epoxy stuff in black so Im gonna try some High heat outdoor stuff (barbacue paint/says it will work on car parts) I dig your bike I'll be working on a bobber myself as soon as Triple six is done. I would say powder for any parts that are gonna have rocks coming up at them.

ooh i do powder coating... really like the look! it does hold up very well to gas! you should be just fine iwht it on the insides of your engine cases

Yeah I have been looking at your project for awhile and read you did powder coat. Thanks put my mind at ease. Do you bake in a gas stove oven? I thought about buying and old gas stove, taking the top off and building it up a little bigger, to try some powder coating. But I need to get a good compressor first so I can operate my hammer and sand blaster. I have an airless spray system I'm gonna use to spray the tank with. Auto store has some preped auto paint I'm thinking of using.

NEVER IN A GAS OVEN!!!! dangerous!!!!... you can get an old electric oven/stove... and rock that... i still have one i use for smaller parts cause it is easier/cheaper to heat that than the big oven... hell i even have a toaster oven i use for very small parts... make a rack that is solid and easy to handle... if you bump the powdered part as you are moving to the oven it will knock the powder off... the oven is the easy part... cleaning the parts is the tricky part!!!
alot of the local auto parts stores have some awesome pre mixed paint (dupi color) I have shot this many times it is cheap and works great...
as far as the compressor... a Powder gun can ONLY use 20-30 PSI so you cna use a crap compressor and be cool just make sure you have a good regulator and air filter... you also do not want to use a oil line compressor make sure that it just blows air though the gun (i use moisture catches on all my powder coating guns) if you really take your time you can do some cool things wiht powder... i do alot of 2 tones, use special tape to get diff effects... here is what i mean:

Cool I'll hit u up with more questions on powder coating later. I'm rebuilding my engine pan up since yesterday. Up till about 2 am. Took the first pic and then just kept going. Only worry right now is the crankcase leaking. Used some high temp rattle can on the cylinders came out nice. I like the two tone stuff gonna use is polish/paint.

I figure everyone is visual like me so here are some pics wish I had more in between shots but hated stopping to take off gloves to take pics

DVC00485.jpg

Clean bottom crank case drilled out the the rivets to access the bottom of the pan. Had a good 1/4 inch of crud I couldnt see or get too.

DVC00488.jpg

I was goning to tap into all three rivet area and replace with stainles but due to clearance issues with my tap opted for just the middle. I tested with all three screws in and dont see any vibration.

DVC00490.jpg

Here the top half all clean with new bearings.

DVC00491.jpg

This is what I use to hold my upper crank case this cylnder bolts still in. It's a tabe saw stand I got at Lowes cheap.

DVC00492.jpg

This is my donor/refrence engine, manual, gaskets, seal on my work bench. I like have this engine I'll pull out a bolt compare it to one in my box of bolt, return it, clean and use the on from the box.

DVC00493.jpg

A little further up the road here.

More shot of my engine build

DVC00495.jpg

New seals :) Cleaned up netural switch

DVC00500.jpg

Clean stator with new wear preventive wire wrap

DVC00502.jpg

Not so good close up of new wire wrap on stator

DVC00497.jpg

Cover with nice stainles bolts no gasket yet will install engine into bike without cover to avoid scatching.

DVC00499.jpg

Close up of stainles detail
