cb360 Project: OrangeKrush

Re: cb360 Project: OrangeKrush - HELP!!!!!!! does this mean its over???

I posted this in the 1-800-cafe-help but i figured it directly relates to the build so... Here is what i found on the bottom of the steering tube on the frame...

Can I bend this back or is the frame dead??? Honestly if the frame is garbage than I seriously give up on this project....

Well, it's likely been like that a LONG time and nobody's been killed on it yet, right?

I'm no engineer, but given it's at the front of the steering tube, it would seem to me to be at the least stressed part of the tube under normal braking and cornering loads. I wouldn't bend it back - leave it as is. Are you swapping out for tapered bearings?

this is all very true. I was planning on replacing them with tapered bearings but im not sure if that will work now... Ya I'm with you tho, I definately am not going to mess with it... My dad thinks I should bend it back... I dont know. I've had SO many problems with this project and it seems like its just getting worse... When is it the right time to just give in?? I'm not trying to sound defeated its just the cost vs. results donts seem to be paying off...

well I guess I'm gonna just forget its even there, check that the steering is tight when i get the front end back on and hope for the best. Tomorrow im gonna be painting the frame with the orange paint for 2 reasons. 1. it'll look badass and 2. I ran out of black lol

I'll definately put up a post tomorro!

it should be fine, mine is a little bent in a similar place. my SO checked it out (he used to work as a frame straightener) and said that it didn't effect the integrity of the frame. don't bend it back, though.
go over the rest of the frame thoroughly, check for any cracks or other signs that the frame is damaged.
on another note, excellent job on the paint!

Re: cb360 Project: OrangeKrush - Frame Painted!!!

SHE'S ORANGE EVERYBODY!!!!!!!! YAY!!!~~!!!!!!!!

I'm gonna do another coat of orange a little later today (not sure if this will do any harm to it or not, I'm using duplicolor engine enamel) then I'm gonna do the lower part of the frame (probably just underneath the engine) with a coat of low gloss black to hide any dirt, grime and oil that my get on the frame once the bike is back together and on the road. YAY!

This is where I got the inspiration to do the frame orange: the ktm superduke 990 Rebel

that's the steering stop tab that's bent, right?

the old steering locks used that tab to hold the steering in one direction. bike thieves would bend it up with a crowbar to steal the bike. if you haven't owned the bike since new, this may have happened to the bike sometime in its' past.

Alright, so I came back after a few hours to check the frame and its blatently obvious that one can of paint is not enough, grey is showing through in a bunch of places and the areas where the coating is thin are very rough and not shiny at all.

So what do I do now? Is it alright if I just go over it with another can of paint and thicken up the thin spots in a few days? Will it be noticable? or should I just buy enough to completely cover the frame again and forget about this layer?

Should I wet sand the frame or paint it as is?

I'd just say wait a week, then fill in those spots. You can wet sand if you want, but for the frame, I think it's unnecessary. After you fill in those spots with another coat, wait another week and clear it.

SOOO after being out of town for a while I'm back, And it seems like the world has done a 180! I got a job (yay futureshop) today, I managed to do some odd jobs for cash while i was up at the cottage which = 3 cans of spray paint + some extra cash. The project is back on track! (it seems like half of my posts are updates saying the project is on hold while the other half are about it being back on track again!!)

Anyways so tomorrow I'm going to be laying down another coat of paint on the frame, and fix the dents my brother put in the gas tank  GRRRR!!!! and then I'll turn my attention to the engine and begin re-assembly! YAY!

So now that I have a job I find myself lacking time instead of funds, but I am still managing to find ways to think positive. The weather was pretty nasty this morning so it left me little to no time to break out the engine and do anything with it. Instead, I put down a second coat onto the frame *I still managed to miss some spots too :-[ * clean the headers, cut some flange thingy off of the upper one, then painted the lower one... I also taped up the lower triple tree and and painted that. My workshop is a complete mess so I spent the rest of the day trying to get that sorted out... It didnt really end up any better than it started. anywys... PICTURES!!! ------ MORE INFO AT cb360cafe.blogspot.com

whyd you leave the centerstand on the frame?

Eitherway it looks good.. loud, but good :)

I tried for a grand total of 3 weeks to get the centerstand off the frame. I knew I wanted to keep it on, but I would of had to of destroyed the mounts to get it off... I wish I could of gotten it off.

Re: cb360 Project: OrangeKrush REASSEMBLY!!!!!

Time for a lonnnnngg overdue update. K so I haven't really been all that busy with the bike lately until yesterday. I finally decided that I was fed up with seeing my bike in pieces, so i started to reassemble her. I am personally really digging the color scheme and really like the matte look combined with the gloss orange.

I think its looking good!!

And you would be right! it is looking good, great work man.. Cheers Andycafe.

So the rims are in the shop right now. I ended up getting a fresh set of bridgestone spitfires (front 100/90/18 rear 110/90/18) for 160 bucks altogether!! i'm also getting the wheel bearings changed and the forks are being done too! The guys at Ontario cycle salvage are awesome to deal with too. I can't wait to see the rims with the new tires fitted. I'm still looking for a honda cj360 seat that i could use to cafe the back end but so far i've had no luck finding one locally... I also got the exhaust tips in for the cl pipes! I'm just not sure how i'm going to mount them yet, any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I also managed to get the bike ownership transferred.. turns out that since the bike hasn't been registered since 1979 it had been deleted from their database so it actually ended up being super easy to get it put into my name, SCORE!

That orange looks awesome. Congrats on getting it registered cool thing to know when looking for a vintage bike.

Ya, I was really expecting to have to fight it out to get the bike certified, luckily i was wrong!

as for a progress report, I got the rims back from the shop and the new tires are sick! I also installed the new wheel bearings. On the downside of things, I have to repaint the frame and exhaust headers because the paint didn't come out very well. i.e. ton of overspray and it scratches so easy. I'm thinking of getting the frame professionally sandblasted and then I can give it another try. If anyone in the GTA has a sandblasting setup or knows someone who does let me know.

My dad and I took a stab at kreeming the tank yesterday, I think it turned out alright but I don't think its perfect... I'll post pics later maybe

I wanna get this thing done!!!

I also got the forks back from the shop too so now I just have to get the steering bearings and a cj360 seat pan (STILL looking for one!!!) and things will really pick up.
