CB360T Idling question from a newb

Hello all,

I am very new at these vintage Japanese bikes, however over last weekend I picked up a very fresh 1975 CB360T which has almost no rust, starts at first kick and etc.. with 18,000 miles on it. It looks like it has been well taken care of from the previous owner.

Here is my question: when it is idling, it has to idle between 1,800rpm ~2,000rpm , anthing below the motor will die. I think it is rather high but I'm not sure if it is normal for a bike this old.
The engine also makes a lot of ticking sound and i'm guessing i need to do value adjustment.

with these two things mentioned, is there a way to lower the idling rpm without motor shutting off? Are these two things related in anyway? what do i have to replace?

Any input will be very appreciated. The bike does run like a champ through all the gears which i'm very happy about.

thank you, will look forward for your answers.

the ticking usually means it needs a valve adjustment. slapping indicates a loose cam chain. the low speed jets are could be clogged, but check the boots for cracks. sounds like an air leak. those cv carbs are real pain in the ass, thats why i'm running a set two 750 carbs on my 350. give the carbs a good cleaning and run a guitar string through the jets to get out all the crud.

good luck. don't forget to download a manual.

Just a word of caution: quiet valves = bad

Adjust to factory specs as per your manual. Clearance on the exhaust valve tappets will be slightly greater than intake, as they get hotter and metal expands more.

You want some noise from your valves. Better to be a little noisy than dead silent. This means the valve never completely closes and always remains in contact with the tappet. Bad.

Tim is right about the noise. The saying is: if you hear them ticking, they aren't sticking.

Don't know much about the CB's but to they have a cam chain tensioner? If so, it may need adjusting. Mine was rattling a bit but after a slight adjustment its pretty quiet. A good cleaning and syncing could help the idling. Also, the mixture screws may need adjustment.

Best of luck.

sorry i was in a hurry when i posted. you do need some ticking, but it shouldn't be excessive. with out some ticking the valve isn't closed. loose cam chains ususlly sound like gravel in the motor. the motor is well designed and trouble free. the carbs however are a real pain. the diaphrams are $90 each. and the float bowls seem to leak alot even with new gaskets. there is some hesitation but the gas milage ia supurb. i'm talking an actual 50+mpg. i'm building a 350 now. you can buy complete gasket sets from Z1 enterprises for $26. camrollers unfortunatly are about $125. you can still order them from honda. go to mrcycles online and they have a complete microfinch. my honda dealer matches their prices for me. i have a manual on pdf for he 360T. if you need one let me know. i just have to find a place to upload it. this reminds me i need to put some picks of my 350 motor up on the site.
cheers.

Nice bike dude, I have the same one! Here's a pic below. Mine usually idles at 1500-1700 when all's right. Maybe this is stupidly obvious, but adjusting your idle screw doesn't hold it at a higher RPM?

Nice bike! well mine stays at around 2000 rpm and runs very well. so 1500-1700 Idle is normal for these CB 360T? I just have to clean the idle jet to keep it idling without the Choke.

thank you all for insightful information. I bought carb cleaning chemicals and will be cleaning it this weekend. I will keep all posted. thank you!
