Long time no post! I've spent too much time riding on the darkside lately, and working on my wife's CB125 has me wanting to work on my old CM400 again. I've been looking around and seen a lot more builds on here than when I did mine. I saw that someone used a CB400F tank on a bike, but I haven't been able to find one cheap enough yet. What I have seen are CB360 tanks, which also appear to have the wide tunnel like we need for our strange frame. Has anyone tried it, or is there someone here that has a tank off they can give me some dimensions from? This would open up a whole lot more cool tanks for us if it works. I'm pretty sick of my old teardrop tank!
Talked to someone on the hondatwins site, and figured I had enough info to make this work, so I decided to try it. Shouldn't take too much work. Here's my ebay tank:
A few quick looks showed that it would work, so I got started pulling dents and bondo-ing. Main mod I've had to make is cutting down the mounting ears in the front:
They're only around 7/8" long now. I also cut down my original rubber mounts right on the line where the diameter changes. (Forgot to take that pic, but if you've had our tank off, you know what I mean.) The rear sits a tiny bit higher, even after a little bit of clearancing in the tunnel, but it looks right, I think. It's also about an inch and a half forward of the factory hole. I'm going to make a strap and spacer to fit it. Time to dig in the scrap bin at work! The original CM petcock even fit, and clears the carb, if just barely. I do have to move my coil, but probably only because of the way I mounted the GM coil mod I did back when I first started riding it. Not sure if it would work with a factory coil or not.
I've got some more work coming up on this bike, pod filters and electronics relocation, and maybe some fender cutting. Time to update this bike after riding my sportster around all the time.
I'm fitting a CB500 tank on my CM400 frame, and had to clearance the tunnel on the tank but didn't have to mess with the mounting ears on the frame. Clearing the tunnel on the tank involved a little persuasion from a hammer...
My seat arrangement is a bit different as the seat mounts from under the tank via two steel "forks", AKA "Much Much Go" 'style. The tank will actually rest on the forks. I'll post pictures soon...
Got everything sorted out, and the tank painted. The vinyls just came in today, and I haven't has time to put them on yet, but here's a quick update. Think it turned out pretty good. Wasn't too difficult, either.
Sorry, I don't get on here as often as I used to. I did get my graphics finally. Sorry for the cell phone pic.
I need to re-jet a little after all the work I've done, but it's done for the most part. I did a build thread, kinda, over on honda twins if anyone wants to have a look at some of the stuff I did.
