CB400F Clutch problem...HELP!!!

Islandstar

Been Around the Block
Finally got my V Star sold, so trying to get my Cb sorted...so I have the bike on the center stand, put it in neutral and bike starts fine, however when I put it in gear the bike engages and the back wheel turns without throttle. So I then sat on the bike and turn it on in neutral, but when I try to put it in gear it just shuts off. What could be my problem.
Thanks in advance.

your clutch is not working? 8)

Have you tried adjusting it? It needs to be tighter, as its not disengaging when you pull the clutch lever.

Adjusting it?!?!?!?! :-\
When on centre stand, after I put it in gear, the back wheel is turning at speed. If I take it off the stand when I try to put it in gear it shuts off!!!!

Do you have a manual?
Look up 400f clutch adjustment. Its fairly simple

No problemo amigo.
Not being a dick it's just easier to read it out of the manual than to explain it on here

Hey us 400Fers have to stick together 8)

I adjusted mine a little tonight and all of a sudden my downshifts are so smooth I cant tell if it shifted or not. Its nice, but i miss my little click click click.

Ok, here's where I am...started the bike in neutral and after in put it in gear neutral light is now off, I release the clutch lever but the bike doesn't shut off...back wheel just keeps turning. What next?

Isn't that how it's supposed to work?
Pull lever, tire stops, release lever tire spins haha

Lol....you're absolutely right, what I forgot to mention is that the bike is still on the center stand!!!!

So you pull the lever and the tire doesn't stop?
Take it off the stand and see what happens. Sometimes the wheel won't stop spinning unless it has a little resistance.

But your clutch is still too loose.
Screw the barrel adjuster on the clutch cable (at the lever) all the way out and see if that helps

No problemo amigo.
I will say though that now that you know it's all good you should go back an readjust at the motor so that you still have some room for adjustment at the lever in case you need it on the side of the road.

Gotcha!!!! I'm on DCC right now getting some carb parts, is there any thing I should consider getting in case clutch might need working on...or should I make that decision with case open?

New clutch springs are cheap and a good idea, the plates are 50 bucks or so and i wouldn't bother with those unless you think you need them.

do you have a CB400/350f manual? I have one in PDF form that can be emailed to you.

thanks thirsty...I do have one.
rode the bike today for the first time, cant say it was wonderful, but I rode it. What I did notice is that the only way I can start it is by first putting it in neutral...it wont start if its in gear and I pull the clutch lever, what should I be looking for now?

What does it do when you try to start it? Lurch forward?
