Cb450 bad noise cam chain tensioner after milling?

joevirus563

Coast to Coast
I've had my head and deck milled. I've checked the piston clearance and all should be fine.

Timing is ok
200psi on each cylinders.
Valve are at 0.03mm

Those are high compression thr piston.

I might have mischecked the piston to valve clearance but as far as I know it was at 0.06

What so you guys think?

Re: Cb450 bad noise piston slap?

it does not sound right but it does not sound like pistones hitting
but you had the head AND deck milled......of course you clayed the pistons and checked the squish ? how much material was removed ?
how far off is the cam timing from the lowered head ?
what are valve clearances set at?

Valve clearance set at 0.03mm I clayed the piston yes and found about 6mm of space. I had to redo the combustion chamber because of the milling.

About 0.015" on the head and deck.

Timing was pretty much right on the timing mark...

Could it be the carb sync?

Re: Cb450 bad noise piston slap?

i dunno it is hard to tell from the video what happens if you pull the sparkplugs out and crank it over with the starter ? spin it fast with starter is it quiet?

By squish you mean the distance of the top of the side of the piston to the top of the deck right?

I've installed 2 base gasket to help that... Could it be the piston the top hiding the head because of deck height?

No starter only crank.

It is smooth but I can still feel a little bit if resistance while kick starting it.

yes that is what i meant the area around the edge outer of piston, you removed .015 total " and added a gasket ? should be ok

God I'm scared of breaking the engine more if I run it that way... Could it be a too tight squish?

Re: Cb450 bad noise piston slap?

i dunno are you feelling resistence when turning over right at top dead center ?

I'll check the resistance tomorrow.

I shouldn't feel any resistance at all at TDC right? I should feel the cam resistance?

Re: Cb450 bad noise piston slap?

yeah cam resistance only, it is a smooth resistence, listen for clicking

Cam tensioner is applying tension.

I've check and I can hear a some noise at the fire mark right before TDC. But really it's pretty smooth.

As far as I know I'm not that offset as for the valve adjustment that can cause that loud of a noise...

Re: Cb450 bad noise piston slap?

Remove the valve cover (taking the pressure off the valves) and turn it over by hand, this will eliminate the resistance you feel from compressing the valve springs, and should make it easier to feel if anything is hitting.

And yes really loose valves can be that loud. Recheck your clearances.
Youre also idling really high it seems?
Put your hand by the exhaust and check for leaks around the connection, exhaust leaks can sometimes sound like tic tic tic

The noise is not from the exhaust... I can feel the hole engine making the noise. I'll remove the tension on the rockers then I should feel almost no resistance right?

Re: Cb450 bad noise piston slap?

Yup it should rotate fairly freely

do not loosen the torsion springs
ok to loosen up valve clearance, but not a good idea to loosen torsion spring and then rotate
a valve could then hang slightly open ? which could be bad

Cb450 no torsion Springs, torsion bars.

Re: Cb450 bad noise piston slap?

Torsion Bars are a type of spring....XB isn't really wrong there....

And coil springs are a type of torsion bar too.....
