CB450 Gearshift Spindle

Been Around the Block
Not sure if this is really the appropriate place to put this. I've been away from the site for quite awhile. Anyways I was just wondering how much trouble it is to swap out the gearshift spindle on a 1974 CB 450. Mine is pretty much F.U.B.A.R. The splines are gone. I did some digging on the site and ppl said the case doesn't need to be split or engine pulled but how bad of a job is it really?

Drain the OIL, pull the clutch cover, pull the CLUTCH and the oil pump since the are attached to each other. Pull the sprocket cover, and there should be a small cir-clip on the shift shaft and a large washer. CLEAN the hell out of that side, you don't want any crap in the engine. Have sand paper ready to polish the shaft on that side if the thing won't slide out easily.

On the Clutch side, you fold down the spring loaded arm out of the shift barrel area and then gently pull out on the rest of the arm, noting how the pin fits in to the double sided spring below it. If the shaft does not come out easy, push it back in and polish on sprocket side of the shaft until it does.

Replace is in reverse. I would also suggest shutting off the auto chain oiler on the output shaft of the trans, all it does is waste oil and make a mess. IF you have one, the screw will poke out the end of the output shaft, just screw the thing all the way in and tight.

Thanks that is exactly what I wanted to hear. That was a major help. I really didn't want to pull that engine again.

Well I finally got it apart. The specialty nut inside the oil filter area threw me for a loop but I got it figured out. The tabs on the washer behind it were catching in the groves for the specialty socket. New shift rod should be here tomorrow and hopefully I will have her back on the road. Now I've heard you can put heavier springs in your clutch to help with slipping. My clutch plates are within tolerance but if you rip on it fast and hard to WOT from a lower rpm 4000 ish without downshifting it will slip if riding tandem. I can't tighten clutch up anymore without the bike creeping so I dont think it's adjustment. Thoughts?

Find 4 even thickness washers say 1mm in width and shim the springs with one on each and see if that helps. If not then the performance springs that can be had on ebay are a better fix.

Alright ill give that a try. I was hoping to have my bike together today but I got sold a junk shifter rod off eBay the splines were shot on it. So I need to find another one and hopefully the seller doesn't screw me over. It was not at all how it was described

If they don't show them, always ask the seller to take pictures of the splines or other hard to see parts. If they won't don't buy the part.

Well the guy offered to make it right with me said he was going to take some pictures of different rods he has and let me pick out the one I want. It was a mixup in the sorting of the parts.
