CB450 K7 Fiberglass Tank Build

That is one amazing build. Loved how it was shining in the sunlight after the wet sanding. It is going to look amazing once it painted. Can't wait to see the final result.

Thanks Jay, hopefully before too long.

wow, this is amazing - I'd love to see pics of the whole bike so we can get a chance to take it all in - your care and expertise on this is extraordinary!

OK so fess up. You work with fiberglass all the time right?? I bet you work in a boat yard or something. Nothing I ever made out of fiberglass even came out remotely that good, especially on the first try. Very nice and pro. Huge tank

Thanks. I'm going to start a build thread in the Big Arse Project section before too long. I didn't want to drag a thread out for a year or more and I knew it was going to be a long one, so I'm waiting till I'm somewhat near the end of the build to get started. At this point I've got just about everything fabricated, so now it's about time to disassemble, clean, paint, polish etc. and reassemble. Still a lot to do I know.

Nope, never done any glass work professionally. I've done some "hobby" fiberglass projects of different sorts over the years but I'm by no means an expert, just slow and methodical.

I can't wait to fill it up and see how much it holds.

Man, ace or what?! Best manufacuring ever! Seriously good work. Additional congradulatory superlatives.

Speechless.

Definitely know what you're on about with the bondo/sanding routine...my first attempt at fibreglassing has seen me go through about a half pound of fibre-filler and another quarter pound of bondo. I'll probably use another quarter before I'm done haha.

Anyway, just want to say that this was an awesome read-through and the finished item is rockin'! Kinda reminds me of how they tailor F1 car cockpits to the drivers.

Cheers - boingk

Thanks boingk!,

I was just reading through your thread in the BAP section. I like the way you molded in the grooves in your pan for rigidity.

No matter how smooth and even you think you've gotten the mold, there's still going to be filling to do, so don't worry about it.

Man, this is some really phenomenal composite work. Thumbs up on this one, it looks really good.

I've already posted pics of the painted tank in the BAP section, but I thought I'd stick some here also to finish out this thread.

I also wanted to report on the capacity of the tank. Even bigger than I expected; about 8-1/4 US gallons. That includes about 1/2 to 3/4 gal in the reserve.

Some finished pics:

Thanks Rockcity and Joe!

It's on the road, about 50 miles so far.

Take a look at it in the Show 'n Shine and let me know what you think (good or bad).

8 gallons... that's the same size as my first car's fuel tank.
loved the write up, i imagine it's going to be very helpful to a lot of us here :)
