cb500 clutch push rod

I'm sure this is an old dead horse by now, but here goes. I removed the left side trans cover on a 73 CB500 to inspect the clutch push rod as the clutch was very difficult to squeeze and did not full disengage the clutch. I found a ball bearing in the cover (I know that's supposed to be there) then a short rod piece probably 3 inches, then the rest of the rod running to the clutch pack on the other side. It does not appear to be broken, but is in two pieces. Does this sound right?

Probably normal. It's designed so it can move around
You should be able to see if the ends are machined/polished
